Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene sparks WILD theory about MCU’s biggest event

As expected, Spider-Man: Brand New Day does have a post-credits scene, and it’s worth sticking around for, if only to understand the theory that’s followed and the implications it may have on the MCU. 

The fourth Spidey film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe picks up four years after the events of No Way Home, with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) trying to rebuild his life after Doctor Strange’s spell erased the world’s memory of him. 

While he faces isolation and spider-mutations, he’s soon pulled into a new conflict thanks to the rogue telepath, Jean Grey (yes, everyone’s predictions were correct: Sadie Sink plays the X-Men icon). 

Given this is a Marvel production, it should come as no surprise that there’s bonus footage after the credits start rolling. Before we get into the theory, here’s what goes down…

Spider-Man: Brand New Day post-credits scene explained

There are no mid-credits scenes in Brand New Day. Instead, we’re treated to one extra scene at the very end of the credits.

The stinger centres on Ned Leeds’ (Jacob Batalon) Spider-Tracker app, which suddenly detects Spider-Man’s location far away from Earth. 

The icon drifts away from the planet, suggesting Peter is either in space or an alternate universe. Finally, the film ends with the familiar promise that “Spider-Man will return”.

This has left fans speculating about where Peter is headed next and how it could connect to the events of Avengers: Doomsday and the wider Multiverse Saga.

The biggest theory behind Brand New Day’s ending

Although Marvel doesn’t explain why Peter appears to be so far from Earth, a theory has emerged that this teases an Incursion – the catastrophic collision of two universes that is expected to play a major role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

One Redditor believes the biggest clue isn’t that Spider-Man appears to be in space, but that Ned’s tracker seemingly shows two separate Spider-Man signals.

“The tracker still shows Peter Parker on Earth-616 in Queens, but then it also detects another Spider-Man deep in space. That made me wonder: what if it isn’t tracking the same Peter at all?” they wrote. 

“My theory is that the second signal belongs to another Spider-Man from a different universe. If an Incursion has already begun, Earth-616 could be starting to overlap with another reality, and the tracker is detecting a second Spider-Man as those universes begin colliding.”

If that’s the case, they believe it could also tie into the mysterious “space crisis” referenced in the Thunderbolts post-credits scene.

“I’m not saying it’s definitely Tobey Maguire’s or Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, but it would make sense if Marvel is slowly setting up their return through the beginning of an Incursion instead of revealing them outright,” they continued. 

Another Redditor shared a similar theory while going further into the events of the Marvel comics, theorising that the scene is instead teasing a live-action Miles Morales ahead of Doomsday. 

Drawing comparisons to Marvel’s 2015 Secret Wars comic, they argued that the MCU could be adapting parts of that storyline in a different way.

“The comic book run Secret Wars (2015) starts out with an incursion between 616 and 1610, which is the Ultimate Universe,” they wrote.  

“From 616, Reed Richards pilots a ship of heroes away from 616 and the Maker (Reed Richards form 1610) pilots a ship of villains away from 1610. Miles Morales stows away on the Maker’s ship. Both ships end up on Battleworld.

“In Doomsday, in lieu of the Ultimate Universe, the incursion is instead between 616, 828 (the Fantastic Four’s universe) and 10005 (the X-Men’s universe).

“My theory is that the Spider-Man sighting in space is Miles Morales arriving on the Fantastic Four’s ship during the events of Doomsday. I think in 828, Miles Morales is Spider-Man.”

The Redditor went on to say that the MCU can’t do a straight adaptation, but many of the pieces exist. 

“There’s an incursion; The Fantastic Four are onboard a ship that travels between universes; and now there is a sighting of Spider-Man in space,” they commented. 

“Both Peter and Miles are in the Secret Wars comic run from different universes. In the MCU, the Fantastic Four are coming to 616 instead of from 616 so it just fits that Miles is onboard their ship instead of Peter in the MCU’s version of events.”

Now, it’s worth noting that Holland wasn’t among the actors announced for Avengers: Doomsday, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t make a surprise appearance – or a different version of him. 

If not, the post-credits scene could simply be teasing an alternate Peter or his return in Secret Wars, potentially for a multi-Spidey reunion on Battleworld. For now, it’s pure speculation, but that’s all part of the fun, right?
