For months, Marvel fans have been trying to work out exactly who Sadie Sink is playing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Now, a completely unexpected red carpet interview might have just given everyone the answer.

Singer-songwriter Steve Lacy, whose track ‘oh yeah?’ appears in the upcoming Tom Holland film, was chatting to reporters at Monday’s Los Angeles premiere when he seemingly dropped a major spoiler without realising.

During the interview, Lacy was asked: “Out of all of the characters in the film you’re aware of and, without spoiling anything, who is your favorite? Or who are you most excited to see?”

Instead of dodging the question, he immediately replied: “You know, what? Jean. I like Jean. She’s the villain but there’s a reason to her madness.”

The interviewer visibly looked surprised, and it didn’t take long before clips of the exchange started circulating online. People quickly linked the comment to Sadie Sink, with many taking it as the clearest indication yet that she’s playing the iconic X-Men mutant Jean Grey.

Marvel hasn’t

officially confirmed Sink’s role, but the theory has been floating around for more than a year. It’s only gained traction after promotional teasers appeared to show the Stranger Things actor sporting darker hair and green contact lenses, fuelling speculation she’d been transformed into the telekinetic superhero.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, chose to erase everyone’s memory of him in order to stop the multiverse collapsing. That decision left even his closest friends, including Zendaya’s MJ Jones-Watson and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, with no recollection of who he is.

The fourth Spider-Man film introduces several new faces to the franchise, including Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, but Marvel has kept details about their characters tightly under wraps.

If Marvel was hoping to keep Sadie Sink’s role a surprise, one off-the-cuff red carpet answer may have made that a lot harder.
