So much went down in House of the Dragon season three episode two that you may have missed a quieter scene involving Helaena, which some fans think is a sly dig at the beef between showrunner Ryan Condal and franchise creator George R.R. Martin. For context, the author and showrunner worked closely together for season one of the Game of Thrones prequel series, which is based on Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood. However, their relationship later soured after Condal made several major changes to Martin’s story. The author detailed his grievances in a now-deleted blog post published in September 2024, titled ‘Beware the Butterflies’. In it, he criticised the decision to cut Prince Maelor, Aegon and Helaena Targaryen’s youngest son, saying this weakened the horrific ‘Blood and Cheese’ plot in season two. Credit: HBO Martin added at the time, “And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House of the Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4…” Earlier this year, the author revealed the relationship had deteriorated even further, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s abysmal.” He claimed Condal stopped listening to him after season one and that HBO eventually asked him to submit notes through the studio instead of directly to the showrunner. A few months later, Condal addressed the situation in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly. He said he was “disappointed” by Martin’s criticism, describing the author as both a personal hero and a literary icon. The showrunner insisted he had spent years trying to involve Martin in the adaptation process, but claimed the author eventually “became unwilling to acknowledge the practical issues at hand in a reasonable way”. Condal said his job is to balance staying faithful to the source material with the production demands of running a major HBO series, adding that he hopes the pair can “rediscover that harmony” one day. Is this House of the Dragon scene a nod to the fallout? Despite Condal’s more pragmatic approach to the criticism, some fans noticed a scene in season three’s most recent episode that they think is a sly dig. you cannot convince me that helaena journaling about butterflies isn’t a nod to george’s beef with the show and the “butterfly effect” problem he had with helaena’s arc for season three. ryan condal is so petty and i kinda love it! pic.twitter.com/ta8djhP4DU — nasser (@nasserreviews) June 29, 2026 It unfolds when Alicent (Olivia Cooke) hurriedly tries to get Helaena (Phia Saban) to safety as Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) descends on the Red Keep. Alicent gathers her things, including an open book of Helaena’s. The camera pans to show the page, and guess what the subject is? Toxic butterflies. The picture shows a butterfly with the words, “They are said to cause death to people around them.” One eagle-eyed House of the Dragon fan spotted this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment and the imagery’s parallels to Martin’s criticism. Taking to X, they wrote, “You cannot convince me that Helaena journaling about butterflies isn’t a nod to George’s beef with the show and the ‘butterfly effect’ problem he had with Helaena’s arc for season three. Ryan McDonald is so petty and I kinda love it!” Another pointed out, “Especially with it being butterflies that cause death ‘toxic butterflies,’” to which the OP wrote, “OH MY GOD.” “This is hilarious and interesting, you’re on to something my friend,” a third agreed, while a fourth added, “Wait. You’re so right.” One fan offered an extension to the theory, writing, “Is it possible it’s his way of acknowledging that GRRM was right, there was a ‘butterfly effect’ problem and mayyybe they fixed it? Because aren’t we getting Maelor now? (Helaena probably pregnant) which was one of GRRM’s chief complaints… idk, maybe I’m just on copium.” It’s worth noting that this is all entirely speculation at this stage, as neither Martin nor Condal have spoken further about their fallout since their prior interviews. But it’s an interesting coincidence (or otherwise) nonetheless. For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
