The End of Oak Street takes a fairly simple idea of what happens when an entire suburban neighbourhood suddenly ends up millions of years in the past, and gives it a scientific explanation involving wormholes and the bending of space and time. So, how does it actually happen? And how do the Platts eventually get back home? Here’s what The End of Oak Street ending means and how the film’s time travel works. What causes the time travel in The End of Oak Street? Credit: Warner Bros. The first clue appears during the Oak Street summer block party. A radio report mentions that NASA has been tracking “mysterious ripples” in outer space. You probably missed this because it sounds like background news, but is actually important. Then strange things start appearing around the neighbourhood. There are sudden bursts of bright light, while extinct plants and even dinosaur dung turn up in people’s gardens. Basically, the neighbourhood is already being affected by whatever is happening to space and time before the main event takes place. Eventually, the whole Oak Street neighbourhood is pulled through a huge wormhole and transported hundreds of millions of years into the past, leaving the residents surrounded by prehistoric wildlife. So, how does the wormhole work? Credit: Warner Bros. Audrey is the one who starts putting the pieces together. Earlier in the film, she talks about wanting to attend Cornell University, where astronomer Carl Sagan was teaching at the time. After the neighbourhood is transported into the past, she suggests that wormholes could explain what has happened. Her theory is basically that the process started on a much smaller scale. The strange objects appearing in the present were early signs of things moving through these tiny openings in space-time. Those smaller events were like warning signs before a much larger wormhole eventually formed. The film also draws on real scientific ideas. The production notes mention theoretical astrophysicist Kip Thorne, whose work on space-time and wormholes also helped inspire Interstellar. As per SYFY Wire, Sagan himself discussed the theoretical possibility of keeping a tiny wormhole open. In a 1999 interview, he explained, “There are fantastically minute wormholes that are forming and decaying all the time at the quantum level, and the idea is to grab one of those and keep it permanently open.” He added, “Our high-energy particle accelerators don’t have enough energy to even detect the phenomenon at that scale, much less do anything like holding a wormhole open.” But why are there dinosaurs from different periods? Credit: Warner Bros. The dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures around Oak Street aren’t all from exactly the same period of Earth’s history. That is because the wormholes aren’t simply taking the neighbourhood to one specific point in the past and bringing back whatever happens to be there. The production notes explain that Mitchell included dinosaur species from different eras to “reinforce the idea that creatures from across millions of years of Earth’s history have been pulled into the same neighbourhood.” Basically, the space-time disturbance is messing with different points in Earth’s history at once. So, what does the ending actually mean? Credit: Warner Bros. The film never explains where the wormholes originally came from. That’s important because there isn’t a final scene revealing a secret organisation, alien civilisation or another hidden explanation. The cause of the phenomenon remains a mystery. What the film does explain is how the time-travel event behaves: Small disturbances appear first, the wormhole grows into something large enough to transport the neighbourhood, and later smaller portals allow the family to travel back to 1982. The ending also shows that the Platts’ actions had consequences beyond simply getting home. By warning people before the final wormhole appeared, they were able to change what happened. And that’s basically where The End of Oak Street leaves its science. The mechanics of the wormholes are given enough explanation to make the story work, but their ultimate origin is deliberately left unanswered. The film’s production notes even say that Mitchell wanted to avoid familiar science-fiction imagery when designing the portals. The visual effects team instead studied zero-gravity water experiments aboard the International Space Station to create the portals’ distinctive appearance. So, there is real science behind some of the ideas in The End of Oak Street. But the film’s dinosaur-sized wormhole isn’t something scientists can actually build today. Hopefully!
