Top Boy actor Michael Ward has been accused of rape in a case that went to trial yesterday, revealing the alleged details of the crime.

Michael Ward, best known for his role as Jamie in Netflix’s Top Boy, was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault last July. The actor strongly denied these claims at the time, and maintains his innocence, claiming the sexual encounter was entirely consensual.

After almost a year, the case has finally come to trial. While the prosecution claims that the encounter started with consensual kissing that later escalated to sexual assault, Michael Ward continues to deny all allegations.

On Monday, the court was played police interviews from the alleged victim, who said the incident took place in January 2023. According to her account, Michael Ward approached her during a night out in north-east London, where he invited her and her friends to an after-party. The woman was aware of Michael’s career as an actor, and said she was flattered when he showed interest in her.

They shared consensual kisses and intimate touching at first, but after moving to a second location, the accuser claims the assault began.

“I tried to leave the vehicle, and he told me to close the door,” she said in the police interview.

During the alleged assault and rape, the woman said she felt “numb” and “scared”, “wanting it all to be over”.

She claimed she didn’t report the incident at the time because she blamed herself and was afraid to do so, as Michael Ward is a famous actor. They also allegedly exchanged a few texts after the reported incident.

In a statement, Michael told the police: “I deny the allegation of rape. I want to put on record that we had consensual foreplay and consensual sex.”
