Beloved director Martin Scorsese has faced backlash for his investment in an AI startup as the tech steals thousands of jobs in the film industry.

For almost 60 years, Martin Scorsese has been making movies. From the Oscar-winning film The Departed to modern classics like The Wolf of Wall Street, the 83-year-old has been a widely respected figure in the film industry – for good reason. But his latest endorsement of AI in the filmmaking process has proven extremely controversial.

Yesterday, it was announced that Martin would become an advisor to Black Forest Labs. On their official site, Black Forest describes itself as the “frontier lab for visual intelligence”.

cannot stress enough how disappointing it is that Martin Scorsese is collaborating with an AI company and putting a stain on his name so late in his life and career. he is like the last person i’d expect this from

In a statement posted on their website, Martin claimed that there needs to be a more open attitude toward the use of AI in the creative process of making a film.

“Cinema is a young medium, only around 125 years old, so we have to be open to how it can evolve,” he said. “I utilised 3D with Hugo and de-ageing technology for The Irishman. Now, with this tool, I can share what I’m visualising more clearly and efficiently to my creative team — the production designer, art designer, and cinematographer — for them to build on to enrich cinematic intelligence.”

Martin is advocating for AI use in the storyboarding and ideation process, to translate ideas to product better.

“If you have a tool like this, you could figure it out much, much quicker, and you could save production time, and also less wear and tear on the crew,” he added.

This endorsement comes in the middle of a lull in employment in Hollywood and filmmaking. Earlier this year, Marvel Studios laid off many of its core VFX artists, causing widespread outrage. According to research by Otis College of Art and Design in partnership with Westwood Economics and Planning Consultants, 114,000 creative roles have been lost in Hollywood from 2022 to 2025.

The news has sparked significant backlash, as cinema viewers insist they don’t want to see AI used in Hollywood. Despite this outcry and the criticism from big-name actors, it seems like many Hollywood greats are making the AI shift.
