Star Trek actor Wil Wheaton has made his stance on the Harry Potter TV show very clear as JK Rowling’s involvement in the reboot continues to draw criticism. HBO dropped a new teaser trailer for season one this week, and while there are plenty of excited fans, many are vowing not to watch the show due to the author, who is serving as executive producer and rights owner. It’s no secret that Rowling is a divisive figure, having repeatedly spoken out about transgender issues and used some of her Harry Potter fortune to provide financial and legal support for individuals and groups challenging trans-inclusive spaces, policies and workplace guidelines. Despite denying being transphobic, Rowling’s words and actions have been widely condemned by LGBTQ+ rights groups as anti trans. As such, the new trailer sparked a wave of fresh comments from people vowing to boycott the show. And it looks like Wheaton is set to join the movement. Wil Wheaton didn’t hold back when asked about Harry Potter Credit: Kevin Paul/Creative Commons Wheaton, best known for Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Gordie Lachance in Stand by Me, responded to a Threads post asking, “Are we watching the new Harry Potter series?” His answer? “As so many have said, f**k no we aren’t, we are standing with trans people.” Let it be known that the person who asked the question, podcast host Aiden London, is also firmly against the show, replying to his own post, “For me is a big NOooooooooOoo!!!!” Wheaton’s response has received plenty of praise, including more than 9,000 likes at the time of writing. “This is why I love you to death, Wil,” wrote one in the comments, while another said Wheaton “gets it. Why is it so hard for everyone else?” A third added, “What he said.” Credit: Threads It’s far from the first time the actor has publicly stood up for the trans community. In a 2022 interview about his LGBTQ+ allyship, he slammed influential people who stay silent in order to protect their own careers and status. “Shame on every single one of those f**king cowards who is so worried and preoccupied and obsessed with their own access, their own influence, their own social standing, their own ambition, that they are willing to put all of that ahead of the fundamental right of a trans person to exist and walk down the streets feeling as safe as I,” he told Forbes, “That is inexcusable.
