It’s official: Off Campus season two is focusing on fan fave ship Dean (Stephen Kalyn) and Allie (Mika Abdalla). And there’s an interesting piece of information from the showrunner that suggests it’s avoiding Bridgerton’s biggest mistake. Don’t get me wrong: Bridgerton is still a great show, and I’ve loved so many of the creative decisions in translating it for Netflix viewers. But one major pitfall we’ve seen time and again is the sidelining of couples once they’ve had their chapter. Yes, the stories have been excellent and the casting even better, but for two seasons now we’ve been surviving on Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate (Simone Ashley) crumbs. The showrunner did explain that it’s not fair to bring actors back just to be in the background, but the demand is clearly there – so much so that fans were hoping for a spinoff after their reappearance at the end of season four. Like Bridgerton and Elle Kennedy’s book series, Off Campus will focus on a new Briar U couple per season. But showrunner Louisa Levy has promised that season one’s couple aren’t going anywhere. “We are so excited to continue Allie and Dean’s story as our primary romance of season two after kickstarting their romance in season one,” she said in a statement. “But if you fell in love with Hannah and Garrett, don’t worry – they will still be an integral part of our robust ensemble. We’re looking forward to telling the next chapter of everyone’s story.” And the show is set to follow this structure each time. FYI the fact it’s switching up to focus on Allie and Dean means the order of the books has been changed slightly. Season one does centre on the events of the first book, The Deal, but Dallie’s story is actually told in the third novel, The Score. The second, The Mistake, tells Logan and Grace’s love story. Since India Fowler has been cast as Grace in season two of the Prime Video series, we can expect their arc to tie into the second chapter in the same way Dean and Allie’s did in the first. It goes without saying that there’s space for both this show and Bridgerton to exist (the more yearning, the better), but at least we know certain characters won’t be getting sidelined in the future of Off Campus (lord knows we couldn’t cope without Gannah… or Dallie.)
