Beauty in Black star Bailey Tippen addresses whether Sylvie is really dead after that ending

I’m still not over that ending of Beauty in Black season 3, and the biggest question everyone is asking is whether Sylvie is really dead, so here’s what Bailey Tippen, who plays Kimmie’s little sister, said about that ending.

Sylvie’s fate was one of the most heartbreaking parts of the season 3 finale. After spending much of the season caught up in the fallout from Glen’s death, she finally comes face-to-face with Jules and tells him the truth about what happened to his son.

But Jules doesn’t exactly take the news well. He shoots Sylvie, seemingly killing her, before going after Rain.

And while Netflix has described Sylvie as dead, people have already started wondering whether there could be more to the story. We never actually see her body or witness Jules shooting her. This has led to loads of theories that she could somehow still be alive.

So, when I spoke to Bailey about the finale, I had to ask her directly. And her answer definitely isn’t going to make those theories go away.

So, is Sylvie really dead?

Speaking exclusively to Film Shrine, Bailey said, “I mean, all I can say for now is that we’ll just, we’ll have to wait and see. Season 4 is in the works right now. He’s writing it up as we speak, so…”

She also teased what we can expect from season 4, saying, “Well, I’m sure it’s gonna be back with even bolder and more intriguing storylines. So, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Bailey didn’t actually confirm that Sylvie survived, but she also didn’t exactly rule it out. So, naturally, the theories are only going to get bigger from here.

When I asked whether she would return if Tyler Perry wanted her back, Bailey said, “I don’t see why not. This has been a series that we’ve been working on together for about 2-3 years. We’ve done about 3 seasons and 7 parts in total. We’ve worked on this together like a Beauty in Black family for so long. So I mean, of course I would love to return.”

She also addressed how she would want Sylvie to return if she really is dead and Tyler Perry decided to bring her back in a flashback, dream or memory. She said, “You know, it’s a soap opera, so I think anything could happen. It could be any one of those or more.”

Sylvie’s final scene was the most emotional to film

Whatever happens to Sylvie next, Bailey revealed just how difficult her final scene was to film. She described the scene as being “head-to-head” with Jules, who has his gun ready to use.

Bailey said, “My most emotional scene would definitely be the last scene that we see in the finale, where she is head-to-head with Jules and he’s got his gun. He’s ready to use it.”

She added, “Definitely the most emotional part where she sees her mom is gone. You know, she really loves her mother. I think that was probably the most emotional scene.”

And it makes sense why that moment hit so hard. Sylvie has spent so much of the season trying to figure out what she actually wants and where she belongs, only for everything to fall apart in the finale.

Bailey also explained why Sylvie chose to move back in with her mum instead of staying with Kimmie. “She’s growing up,” Bailey said. “And with growing up, sometimes, you have to take off the rose-coloured lenses. Just really take things as a whole and the full capacity of the situations that she’s in.”

She explained that Sylvie had originally believed living with Kimmie would give her a better life, but things didn’t exactly work out that way.

“And I think she’s waking up to the fact that, although she thought that living here [with Kimmie] would be better, it would be living with the Bellaries. Although she thought that it would be a better situation, she just actually found herself with even more problems to deal with,” Bailey said.

She added, “And I think in season 3, we get to see her kind of choose the lesser evil from her perspective, in her eyes.”

And now, whether she really is dead or somehow manages to return in season 4 is the question we’re all going to be waiting to find out.
