*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Insidious: Out of the Further* Insidious: Out of the Further has arrived in cinemas, more than three years after The Red Door brought the Lambert family’s story to an end. There is a post-credits scene to stick around for, but it’s not your typical horror stinger. Can you believe we’ve had 16 years of Insidious chaos already? You might have assumed The Red Door closed the chapter for good, but the sixth instalment takes the horror franchise one step, well, further – by introducing a brand new protagonist. Patrick Wilson and Ty Simpkins’ Josh and Dalton Lambert have been swapped out for Gemma (Amelia Eve), a young mum raising her daughter Maya (Island Austin) in the same home she grew up in. That said, Gemma’s story is actually connected to the Lamberts. As we learn, when Josh and Dalton banished their demons, it inadvertently opened another door in the Further, paving the way for a new evil in the form of Cyrus. She may have died all the way back in the first Insidious, but that hasn’t stopped her from helping people from within the supernatural realm. This time, she attempts to guide Gemma, who has a pretty terrifying ability. Not only can she travel into the Further, but she can bring those demonic entities out into the real world. Insidious: Out of the Further has one gross post-credits scene Credit: Sony Pictures Yes, there is a post-credits scene, but don’t go in expecting some huge reveal about the Lamberts or the next chapter in the franchise. You see, Cyrus – the primary antagonist of Out of the Further – is a former cult leader who wants to use Gemma’s ability to escape the Further and return to the world of the living. And he intends to bring a whole lot of other nasty entities along for the ride. Among them is a particularly grim dentist demon (which isn’t quite as random as it sounds given Gemma works as a dental hygienist). Not only does Cyrus not live up to his promise, but he also stopped the dentist entity (dentisty?) from going after Gemma earlier on in the movie. So, the post-credits scene is dedicated to DD getting his revenge on Cyrus in the grisliest body horror way possible. It approaches Cyrus with its drill and proceeds to use it on his teeth as he screams in agony. In short, it’s just some deeply unpleasant karma to send us home with. Lovely. Does the post-credits scene set up Insidious 7? Credit: Sony Pictures Not really. The scene confirms Cyrus remains in the Further after the events of the movie – and is having an absolutely terrible time there – but there isn’t an obvious tease setting him up to return. That’s notably different from The Red Door, when Dalton seemingly sealed the gateway into the Further, only for the post-credits scene to tease that it wouldn’t be staying shut forever. There currently isn’t a seventh Insidious movie in the pipeline, so it makes sense Out of the Further’s stinger doesn’t give us an obvious indication of where things go next. That said, the movie itself potentially does. Given Gemma is capable of transporting objects and entities between the two worlds, her abilities massively expand what’s possible within the franchise. And Insidious isn’t disappearing completely anyway. A separate spinoff, Thread: An Insidious Tale, has previously been in development, although that’s distinct from a direct Out of the Further sequel. In short, you won’t leave the cinema with a huge Insidious 7 reveal. You will, however, leave with the image of a demon drilling into another demon’s teeth seared into your brain.
