Ruby Rose has shared a cryptic message about Hayden Panettiere after posting alleged texts from the late actress discussing the pain she felt over her relationship with her mother, Lesley Vogel. Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, at age 36, after being found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina. Dispatch audio references a potential overdose, but the cause of death is yet to be confirmed. The Heroes and Nashville actress had been open about her struggles with addiction, postpartum depression and being raised in Hollywood in her May 2026 memoir This is Me: A Reckoning, where she also wrote about her estrangement from her mother and former manager. Vogel broke her silence on the death of her daughter earlier this week, claiming Panettiere had “lost her way”. In response to a Threads post about her statement, Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose has posted an alleged text exchange between her and Panettiere. Ruby Rose shares alleged texts about Hayden Panettiere’s relationship with her mom The texts, which haven’t been verified, appear to show Rose or another person messaging Panettiere about the “struggle to separate from their parents.” Days after Hayden Panettiere died at 36, her estranged mother told NBC News she had "sadly lost her way." Ruby Rose answered with screenshots she said came from Hayden: "I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I'm 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain." pic.twitter.com/IISFtRd4o2 — Thought Catalog (@ThoughtCatalog) August 20, 2026 “It’s an unnatural position to be placed in. Because they did not act or behave like mothers. So we are wounded from them but the idea of a mother is still so powerful to us,” the message reads. The response, allegedly from Panettiere, says, “All of that lands. I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I’m 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain. I’m her only child left and this is how she wants to handle the situation?!” In a separate Threads response, Rose posted another screenshot and wrote, “Meanwhile: Hayden to one of our friends recently.” The texts allegedly show Panettiere saying, “I’d love to do a podcast/anothony [sic] Bourdain show where we talk about issues and then go to the ends of the earth to find solutions.” Credit: Instagram/@rubyrose Rose also shared a pointed statement on Instagram about Panettiere’s passing, saying she has “so much I want to say about dear Hayden.” “If the roles were reversed, she would have sorted this already. Our brave, courageous H faced everything head on. She was fearless. But it is LOUD and wrong, and scary out there right now. So naturally, I keep calling Hayden for advice on how to handle this,” she continued. “Which means I need more time to get this right for Kaya, but I also need folk to have patience. Wait for all of the information. And don’t take it from her estranged mother. Or any of her abusers. She worked too hard and came too far for this bullsh*t. I promise you.” Lesley Vogel addresses estrangement from Panettiere in new statement While Vogel hasn’t responded to Rose’s posts, she has issued a new statement after facing criticism for her initial comments on her daughter’s death. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Entertainment Tonight (@entertainmenttonight) In a statement to ET, she said, “Although my daughter and I were estranged, it was not for lack of care or love. It was due to the involvement of a toxic individual who I believe led to her death. “Hayden was a beautiful and talented young woman who unfortunately became involved with the wrong person, and although her family tried to extricate him from her life, we were unable to be successful. “I hope all remember Hayden for the beautiful human being inside her and her gift to the world from her time on this earth.” Although Vogel didn’t name the individual, she told NBC News in her first statement that the family had been “trying to get rid of” Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend who pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges in 2021. She also said it’s a “struggle” for “young people who grow up in the entertainment industry,” and that she thinks “Hayden sadly lost her way and I wish it were different.” In May, while discussing her memoir, Panettiere opened up about the issues between her and her mother, claiming “everything was business” before she dropped Vogel as her manager. According to Panettiere, her mother responded, “You owe me.” Vogel strongly disputed her daughter’s account amid the memoir’s release. In a statement to Page Six, she claimed the “present drama is partially to sell books” and said she had chosen to go no-contact after what she described as “20 years of trauma”.
