Italian American Robert De Niro has said he can’t continue to love the US under the current Trump administration after the president called him out on Truth Social.

We’re in the second year of the Trump administration in the US, and multiple celebrities are making their negative opinions of him loud and clear. From wearing anti-ICE pins to major award ceremonies to condemning the White House’s use of their songs in promotional videos, it’s been back-to-back condemnation.

Earlier this year, legendary actor Robert De Niro called Trump an “enemy of the state”. The 82-year-old highlighted the importance of uniting against Trump, calling on people to “save our country”.

Trump hit back on his social media platform Truth Social, saying: “Robert De Niro, another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying — some of which is seriously CRIMINAL!”

At the Rise Up, Sing Out event in New York last Sunday, Robert De Niro doubled down on his opinion of Donald Trump and explained why it’s hard to say he loves the US in the current political climate.

“I hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser,” he said. “I can’t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents and indirectly causing the deaths and suffering of millions more.

The a tor omitted: “I can’t love a country that takes healthcare away from millions of people and uses that money to enrich their pals in the Trump-Epstein class.

“I can’t love a country that sends out masked militias to shoot citizens in the streets, torture our neighbours, and separate families.

“I can’t love a country that’s led by a racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant. And let me just say it: I can’t love the country that’s led by Donald Trump and his sycophant Congress.”
