The Boys’ final season, and its lacklustre finale, have been entered into the worst endings of all time Hall of Fame. There’s honestly nothing worse than your favourite show limping to the finish line, and after showrunner Eric Kripke talked season five up for months, the end product didn’t come close to our imaginations. Sure, there were good aspects, but they’re few and far between. But this is a healing space, so here are nine other shows that might make you feel differently about The Boys tanking. 9. Euphoria Credit: HBO Max It’s maybe not fair to include Euphoria on this list, given that the final season is still coming out, but oh, how far the show has fallen. Between time jumps and the show’s heavy reliance on OnlyFans and shock value, what began as a powerhouse for Gen Z is limping to the finale with the enthusiasm of Cassie dressing as a dog for explicit content. 8. Dexter Credit: Showtime Though it emerged as a unique take on the serial killer genre, Dexter struggled in its final few seasons. A series of letdowns eventually culminated in our anti-hero becoming a reclusive lumberjack in Oregon? He faces literally zero consequences for his actions, making the entire show feel like a waste of time. I simply refuse to comment on Debra’s stupid af ending. 7. True Blood Credit: HBO For much of True Blood’s run, one central idea ran consistently throughout: Bill or Eric. It was the age-old Edward or Jacob issue, so everyone had their favourites for Sookie’s happily-ever-after. However, when it came time for the show to take its final bow, Sookie chose an unidentified man we’d never met before. Bill even sacrifices himself so that Sookie can live a normal life, you know, in a universe where fairies, vampires, werewolves, and witches are basically public knowledge. 6. Lost Credit: ABC There are probably still people who lie awake at night thinking about Lost. The show offered more questions than answers, but I’ll give the showrunners points for consistency; it ended just as confusing. 5. Umbrella Academy Credit: Netflix Netflix’s Umbrella Academy started out as a banger, and it continued hitting home runs for a few seasons. Then came season four, and everything went out the window. Completely new characters were introduced, character development kicked into overdrive, and then the finale made it all pointless. In the final episode, the entire cast allows themselves to be killed to save the universe. It was shockingly unsatisfying, earning 19 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. 4. How I Met Your Mother Credit: CBS After literal years of building up its characters and teasing who the mother of Ted’s kids is, How I Met Your Mother ended the exact way it started: With Ted confessing his love for Robyn, who had broken up with Barney. Oh, but where’s the “mother”, I hear you ask. Well, she’s dead, of course, because that makes perfect sense. 3. The Boys Credit: Prime Video I am still suffering with The Boys PTSD, so it would have been really easy to put the show in the first spot for the worst final seasons of all time. But that simply wouldn’t be fair, because there were aspects of the final season that people actually enjoyed – I’m just struggling to think of them right now. After five seasons of unhinged mania, The Boys’ final season felt like a rushed attempt to tie everything up in a pretty bow. It didn’t work. 2. Stranger Things Credit: Netflix A new entry on this list, the finale of Stranger Things makes The Boys’ final season look like a resounding success. Though naming everything wrong with Stranger Things would take a lifetime, the final battle alone was stupid as hell. This massive monster was essentially defeated by Nancy’s never-ending supply of bullets, a few Molotov cocktails, and the power of friendship. Of course, that’s to say nothing of the glaring plot holes, unresolved storylines, and Eleven’s unsatisfying end. 1. Game of Thrones Credit: HBO You already knew this was going to be number one. Game of Thrones is undoubtedly one of the most popular shows of all time, and for good reason. However, the final season served to demolish the character development of icons like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and Jamie Lannister. Then, in one final gut punch, Bran the Creepy is crowned the new ruler. It’s widely accepted that we all pretend it never happened. Game of Thrones ended with season seven, not eight.
