This sci-fi movie from 10 years ago got one major detail right about life in 2025
It’s creepily accurate
Her is a sci-fi drama movie set in the year 2025 that tells the story of Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Looking back, this film’s plot is eerily similar to what dating in 2025 is starting to look like – all because of AI.

The main plot line of Her is watching Theodore, a lonely writer who has a really boring and unsatisfying life, fall in love with an AI chat bot named Samantha. The AI operates using an earpiece, and can be customised to do whatever its owner wants. Theodore starts off using the AI to help him feel less lonely and be more organised at work, but after he has phone sex – yeah, I know – with the AI, he starts building a romantic connection to it.
The good times don’t last though. Samantha’s AI brain develops too quickly, to the point where she doesn’t find their relationship fulfilling anymore. Imagine getting broken up with by ChatGPT.

Just this week, Sam Altmanm the owner of OpenAI, announced the next big update for ChatGPT.
“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emojis, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it,” he said on his X account.
After a bunch of unfortunate cases connected to AI happened earlier this year, ChatGPT’s language model was made more restrictive, but it looks like those days are gone.

“In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”
Even before this ChatGPT update, a growing amount of people have been dating AI chatbots. Replika AI is the most popular AI girlfriend app, and has over 30 million downloads. The app is for adults only because of the sexual stuff it allows, so yes, lots of people are dating AI girls.
It’s super controversial, but it’s clear that AI isn’t leaving our lives any time soon. So much for flying cars.
