David Attenborough spoke about ‘nearing the end’ of his life and I’m not okay

David Attenborough has made an emotional new speech about “nearing the end” of his life.

The naturalist turns 99 on 8th May. His new film Ocean comes out on his birthday. In the documentary, David Attenborough makes an emotional speech about coming to the end of his life.

He says: “When I first saw the sea as a young boy, it was thought of as a vast wilderness to be tamed and mastered for the benefit of humanity.

“Now, as I approach the end of my life, we know the opposite is true.

“After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea. Today, it is in such poor health I would find it hard not to lose hope were it not for the most remarkable discovery of all.”

He explains how the ocean can “bounce back to life”.

David Attenborough continues: “‘If we save the sea, we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet, I’m sure nothing is more important.”

The new film Ocean explores environmental issues in seas around the world, such as overfishing and coral reef bleaching. The documentary also sheds light on more uplifting stories of ecosystems which have recovered, including how the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii helped endangered albatrosses.

You will be able to watch the film in cinemas. Ocean will also be available to stream on Disney+ later on this year.
