There is a new trailer for the next Harry Potter film

It’s set in New York and stars Eddie Redmayne

The circus of Harry Potter hype continues: Warner Brothers has released a new teaser trailer for the Harry Potter spin-off film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, and it is set in 1920s New York.

The trailer was screened last night at the MTV Movie Awards. Watch it below:

The discordant, plinky soundtrack chimes very consciously with the song that plays at the opening of all the Harry Potter films; by the end of the trailer, it has become the familiar song itself.

We learn that Newt Scamander – Redmayne – was kicked out of Hogwarts for “endangering human life”, yet “one of [his] teachers argued strongly” against this expulsion (GUESS WHO IT WAS). It is quite strange to hear the language of J K Rowling’s magical world expressed in an American accent. There is a New York Times-esque version of the Daily Prophet. There is bombastic politics (will the plot include a ‘President for Magic’ race?). There are phoenixes. There are cloisters, and curious creatures and Colin Farrell, who has a curious accent.

The film will be released in November.
