The number of UW-Madison students affected by Trump’s ban has increased

115 students and staff are impacted by the ban, up from UW’s initial estimate of 72

UW-Madison’s initial statements said 72 students and additional faculty were affected by the travel ban. This number has since increased to 115 people on the UW-Madison campus.

Trump signed an order on Friday restricting migrants and legal U.S. residents from the countries of Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. This travel ban has placed constraints on many citizens and families both inside and outside of the United States.

Now, UW finds there are even more students, faculty, and staff impacted by the travel ban. UW-Madison has advised students affected by the ban to remain in the country.

According to campus officials, there is one UW-Madison student who is currently studying outside of the country and has concerns about their inability to return. This student has both Iranian and Canadian citizenship, and because of this dual-citizenship, the student hopes they will be able to return to the United States on Wednesday.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank has issued a statement in opposition to Trump’s order and reiterates that UW-Madison will not release information on the immigration status of any of its students or staff.

The UW System said there are 130 students statewide that are impacted by the ban.
