Temple professor to appear on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

Professor Sara Goldrick-Rab will be discussing her new book ‘Paying the Price’ on Tuesday night

One of our very own professors, Sara Goldbrick-Rab, who just joined the Higher Education Policy and Sociology faculty last June, will be making her first late night television appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Tuesday, September 27th.

The reason for her late night appearance will be something college students can relate to – college debt. Professor Goldbrick-Rab will be talking with Trevor Noah about her new book Paying the Price, in which she uses her research to conclude that college students should not be paying as much as we currently do to go to school.

She was also named one of Politico’s Top 50 People Shaping American Politics in 2016 for sparking a national conversation about college affordability.

The Tab interviewed Professor Goldbrick-Rab about her appearance on the show and why she feels passionate about changing the affordability of college for the next set of students in the United States.

This Tuesday, you will be making your debut on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Why will you be appearing on the show?

I’ll be appearing on the show to talk about my new book Paying the Price, which talks about the high price of college and what that means for college students. From the six years of research and 3,000 students that I’ve followed in 42 colleges across in Wisconsin, I’ve watched half of the students not be able to pay for college.

One thing I argue about in my book is the new economics of college. A little bit of work, a little bit of study, a little bit of class, doesn’t work anymore.

The book you wrote deals with building a policy around actual students. What was your motivation to write a book like this?

I want people to actually finish college and not have to deal with the financial burden of paying for it. I don’t think people realize how many students are paying for college but in the end, do not receive the degree. This has to change. The majority of my students receive financial aid, but it’s not enough for them. Unfortunately, some of them have even gone homeless from this too.

How are you feeling before your first appearance on late night? Will this be your first time on television?

No, I’ve been on PBS, NBC, CSPAN- the regular things, but never late night television! The Daily show would be out of the ordinary for me. Of course, I’m super nervous and excited because people need to hear this and I’m so glad to be able to tell them about my book and college affordability in a big stage.

What is one thing you want all students to know?

I would tell them that they’re right, college is too expensive. They’re not wrong about their troubles and there’s people out there who are fighting for them.

We are trying- that’s what they need to know.

Since you will be on a big stage like The Daily Show, will you be giving Temple a shout out?

As much as I wish I could, I don’t think I will. I was told to wear a Temple jacket, but this is a serious issue and my job is to inform the public on this.

Professor Sara Goldbrick-Rab has yet to teach a class at Temple since she’s been on a book tour promoting her book. However, she will be making an appearance at the Temple Performing Arts Center to speak and sign books to the general public this Monday, the 26th. Afterwards, she will be leaving to record her appearance for the Daily Show on Comedy Central. Temple students should be aware that Professor Goldbrick-Rab will be teaching in the fall of 2017, so be on the lookout for this famous author and advocate for college affordability.
