Rutgers reports another student has been hospitalized with bacterial meningitis

Public health officials are investigating whether the two cases are related

A campus-wide email was sent out today reporting another student has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

According to the email sent by Melodee Lasky, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health & Wellness, “The student, who was hospitalized on April 29, 2016, is receiving treatment and is recovering. Those who had close contact with the student are being notified so they can receive antibiotics as a preventative measure.”

This is the second diagnosis of bacterial meningitis this semester. The first diagnosis was reported on March 18. According to the email, Public Health officials are currently investigating to see if they two cases are related.

Meningitis can be spread by close personal contact with the infected by sharing drinks, kissing, and coughing.

Lasky also encourages members of the Rutgers community to increase their attention toward personal hygiene practices, such as washing hands, covering coughs and not sharing drinks or utensils with others.

The university said they will provide additional information and recommendations as they become available.
