Rutgers student killed in double shooting near Newark campus

The university said it was not a ‘random’ act of violence

A Rutgers student has been killed in a double shooting inside an off-campus apartment near Newark campus.

The fatal shooting happened last night at around 10pm on 28 Central Avenue.

In a university press release Rutgers confirmed a student from Tom’s River, NJ had been killed, but said the incident was not a “random act” of violence, so there were no further threats to the student body or school community.

A second victim, who was not a student at RU, was taken to hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.

The incident is currently being investigated by Rutgers and Newark police, as well as Essex County Prosecutors – they are looking for two assailants, both around 20 years old, five foot nine inches tall and 154lbs.

One shooter was shirtless and both fled south on Halsey Street after the incident.
