Ban on Panhellenic sorority activity partially lifted

Social events will resume Monday

After a new member of Duke’s chapter of Delta Gamma was hospitalized for an alcohol related incident, all Panhellenic activities at the university were suspended.

A mere four hours later, the ban was partially lifted. This means that chapters can still hold events without alcohol and social events will resume Monday.

The sister is expected to recover fully.

In an e-mail informing of the partial lifting of the ban, students are asked to “Please utilize this time to reflect and keep in mind the severity of this incident. We must maintain our sense of urgency to change the campus culture.”

The e-mail is signed by Clarybel Peguero, director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Anya Ranganathan, president of Panhellenic Council.

There has been some discussion, primarily on the Duke Yik Yak, of whether this same level of action would have been taken if this had happened to a student rushing SLGs or a fraternity pledge.
