Vandals paint communist and anarchist symbols on AD White statue, GWS and Balch

‘This is getting out of control’

New photos of campus vandalism surfaced on Facebook yesterday, showing the AD White statue, Goldwin Smith Hall and Balch spray-painted with a mix of the communist Hammer and Sickle and the anarchist symbol.

This photo of AD White and GWS was posted to the Overheard at Cornell Facebook group.

A red “A” is scrawled on each pillar of GWS.

Cornellians on Facebook have speculated the “A” is an anarchist symbol rather than a reference to The Scarlet Letter.

“I was not so much shocked as I was concerned,” said Joseph Outa ’18, who noticed the vandalism on the Balch steps and posted the photo in Overheard at Cornell. “Moreso since the signs don’t seem to promote any particular cause.”

Cornellians in the Facebook group are unimpressed.

Last week, graffiti appeared on the Sigma Pi fraternity house, as well as a flagpole on West Campus.
