MBTA approves increase in fare by over nine percent

Living in Boston just got more expensive

On Monday, March 7th, the MBTA board approved a fare hike of 9.22 percent, despite protestors who shouted over their meeting.

They shouted chants of “we won’t be ignored” and “this board is corrupt.”

The fare increase will take effect on July 1st, 2016.

This comes just a week after the MBTA announced they would be stopping their late night service.

What does this mean for BU students?

It will cost more for us to leave campus, and will perhaps discourage students from exploring all areas of Boston. It will also discourage BC students to leave Chestnut Hill and come into Boston (but is that really a bad thing?).

Outraged BU student Abigail Gallagher complains, “That’s ridiculous. If anything, the price should be going down… it’s slow, dirty, and never on schedule.”

There is certainly a lot wrong with the T, which is why the board agreed to a price hike in the first place. While it’s annoying that we will have to pay more for the T, starting in July, it may be worth it for the improvements they will make.

“Our intent first and foremost is to try and make sure we’re continuing to deliver better service. That takes money.” said Joseph Aiello, chairman of the MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board.
