Here’s why a pub job in London is actually the best uni job about
Beats stacking shelves any day
As students in London, we’re faced with a lot – extortionate rent, massive commutes and general expensiveness everywhere we go. Many of us are forced to sacrifice our precious spare time to a part-time job, just so we can afford the endless things we have to pay for.
So whether we work in The Syndicate Social in Clapham or The Globe on Moorgate, here are all the reasons why working in a pub is actually one of the most worthwhile ways to give up your spare time when you’re at uni in London:
We get to meet some veeeeery interesting customers
Everyone thinks that Londoners are surly and unfriendly, but working in a pub has taught us that people tend to be a lot brighter when they’re being handed a drink. Plus, people come from far and wide to visit London, so we get to hear wild stories from all over the world.
And even their small tips can add up and become a fortune
Every little helps when we basically have to pay to breathe in London. Getting a little extra cash on top of what we’re already earning is a pretty sweet deal.
Plus, the flexible hours are ideal for us to fit in alongside uni
Working in a pub is pretty much the most flexible job you can have – it’s super easy to switch, pick up or drop shifts depending on how much uni work we’ve got, or whether we can get tickets to that sick night at XOYO that all our mates are going to.
All our customers are pumped for a night on the town
What’s more, people know that London is an amazing night out, so everyone is buzzing to get out and experience it. It’s pretty cool that we get to be a part of hundreds of people’s pre drinks, and we even get to join in ourselves when we have staff parties.
And the regulars are pretty jokes
Every pub has its own unique set of regulars, and it’s always good to see a familiar, friendly face on our shift. Plus, they’re always keen to share some scandalous gossip they learnt at The Edinbro Castle to keep us entertained.
Also, the food discounts literally give us life
Not many people can afford to buy their lunch from Pret every day, but we’d much prefer a quality pub lunch over a dried up old sandwich any day, especially when our discount means it’s half the price and twice as big. Plus, being able to treat our friends to a cut-price feast makes us very popular.
It’s like working with a big bunch of mates
We spend so much time together that it’s impossible not to become friends. Plus, so many funny things happen on shift that it really helps everyone bond quickly. Loads of us are students too, so can all share our regrets over deciding to study in the country’s most expensive city.
And the skills we learn are surprisingly transferrable
We probably wouldn’t have learned time management, multitasking and even crowd management skills quite so thoroughly had we worked in a shop. Plus, all our friends and family love that we can make all the cocktails on the All Bar One menu and pull the perfect pint. We’re now the proud owners of some of the most diverse and varied CVs going.
