Why you shouldn’t live in Jesmond, from the people who don’t

You’ll save a lot of money tbf

| UPDATED

Let’s be real, it would be weird if you hadn’t considered living in Jesmond. But – quick, come closer – is Jesmond really the “dream” people like to think it is?

The residents despise the students and call the police on you before the pres even begin. The chances of you bumping into your ex on Osborne Road are astronomically high and the hoardes of hen parties that arrive in their masses at the weekend are suffocating.

If you like any cuisine other than Italian or burgers, you’re actually screwed – and don’t even dream of that post-club kebab because there is a distinct lack of late night takeaways.

The rent is almost as ridiculous as the twenty minute walk to uni and the Tesco Metro is so expensive you’ll have to consider selling a kidney just to afford your weekly shop.

We hit campus to ask students who aren’t living in Jesmond why they’re the ones laughing.

Yannick Thompson, second year, Zoology, Brandling Park

“I literally live two minutes away from the library and campus in Brandling Park. Plus, coming back from nights out is great because we’re really close to town. Going to Worldies or somewhere is just a 15 minute stroll – we honestly walk everywhere.

“Our house has definitely become the go-to after party spot because it’s on the way home for most people, which is frankly brilliant.”

Sarah Barsby, second year, Sports Coaching, Sandyford

“OK, hear me out – in Jesmond all the houses we looked at had wooden floors, but everywhere in Sandyford has carpets. I know it seems stupid but it’s those little things that make it seem more homely.

“The carpets makes the house warmer as well! Houses in Jesmond are absolutely freezing, my friends who live there have blankets and blankets and blankets, and there’s me taking mine off.”

Matt Hilton, third year, Law, Sandyford

“I don’t hate Jesmond, I actually quite like it. But we had a lot of viewings in West Jes and everywhere we looked was expensive, small and cold – they were rubbish to be honest. My house in Sandyford is much nicer.”

Hannah Wilson, masters, Creative Writing, Sandyford

“I live in Sandyford and I’ve literally only taken the metro once – let’s just say I’ve saved a lot of time and money. Plus the road we live on (Sterbeck Avenue) has a load of really good places to eat, so it’s win-win really.”

Allen Zhang, masters, Engineering, City Centre

“I live in Citygate, which is perfect for me – it’s only ten minutes to walk to campus and Chinatown is nearby which is so useful for me to get things that remind me of home.”

Sam Boardman, third year, Sport Science and Coaching, Heaton

“In Heaton, we’ve got the huge Morrisons right on our doorstep and probably the nicest Spoons in Newcastle – no pricey Tesco Metro in sight.”

Warren Wei, masters, Engineering, City Centre

“Living in the city centre is really convenient. It only takes ten minutes to walk to university and we have a supermarket on our doorstep. Plus, my flat is really nice – like, really nice.”

Ellis Taylor, third year, Law, City Centre

“I live in the city centre because it has access to everything – my gym is around the corner, the centre of town is down the road and my place is two minutes from the law building – the location is unreal.”

Hannah Gardner, second year, Psychology, Sandyford

“I live in Sandyford – it’s a bit quieter than Jesmond which I like. When I first got the house I thought we would be quite remote, but in reality, we’re only a ten minute walk from Osborne Road, which is the same for some people living in West Jesmond.”

Katie Charalambous, fourth year, Criminology with Criminal Justice, Sandyford

“Sandyford’s nice because it is still student-y but a lot quieter, which is great being a fourth year – it’s nice not to have people blasting music all the time into the early hours.”

Jack Stoker, third year, Sport Coaching, Heaton

“The houses in Heaton are not only cheaper than Jesmond, but they’re also much bigger. All of the rooms are more of an even size so there’s no sad little box room. We’ve also got three bathrooms between four of us, which is pretty decent.”
