Every problem you’ll have living in your second year Cardiff house

Look out for the seagulls

| UPDATED

So you’ve moved out of Taly and into Roath if you go to UWIC, Whitchurch if you’re a Medic and Cathays if you’re alright. Here’s every problem you’ll encounter living in your second year Cardiff house:

You thought living on Salisbury Road would be great as it’s so close to everything

The reality is, you’ll have bricks and rubbish thrown through your windows and at least one member of the rugby team will christen your front garden by emptying their bladder on their walk home from the Union.

The seagulls

You thought the Talybont seagull mafia was bad, but the seagulls in Cathays are much worse. Intimidating, ruthless and seemingly much larger than your average seaside seagull. These smug, noisy birds will be spewing your bin bags across the pavement, creating a rubbish obstacle course and leaving you with an angry council member knocking at your door threatening you with a fine.

Living on Miskin Street and getting no sleep

During the first few weeks of term, the endless after-parties were great but now you’re dying for a restful night – one where you’re not interrupted by some monotonous house music playing at 4am.

Getting a terraced house on Harriet Street and thinking damp will not be a problem

Everyone said Harriet Street was the best .“You have to live on Harriet Street” they said, “it’s so central and all the best parties go on down there.” No one ever told you that the houses are also known for their damp and you’ll be living with a cold and sore throat for the rest of the year.

The queue in Lidl at 6pm

Being the only major food store in Cathays, it’s never quiet. You’ll also see everyone you know in the fruit and veg aisle, from that awkward blonde boy in your seminar to your friend’s housemate you met at pre-drinks last week. Your biggest daily regret will be not coming to Lidl in the morning, before the masses enter after their final lecture.

Having to brace yourself for the litter maze on Richard Street

Every single house has wheelie bins and so you’re constantly having to battle between the wheelie bins, bags of rubbish, seagulls and cats when you walk on the pavement just to get to your front door.

Realising Colum Road isn’t that fun

If you’re a resident you probably study Maths and you’ve chosen Colum Road because you either want to be able to walk into lectures 5 minutes before they start – or you were too late at finding a house. You’ll also probably be sleep deprived from waking up to chanting every night because all the first years walk down your road from Talybont.

Living on Ruthin Gardens and getting pestered on a Wednesday by societies knocking on your door asking for things

Every single society drags themselves past Koko’s on their way to the Lash. You thought it would be great living so close to the Union but the downside is every single social wants to get their hands on your cheese grater.

Arguing with you housemates about whether to go to The Woodville, Vulcan or Gassy Jack’s

They all have their merits but each pub has it’s own flavour, so you’re bound to spend evenings arguing which watering hole to situate yourself in. One housemate only wants quids in, the other wants to play pool, another wants a burger and beer meal and the other wants a good mixture of locals and students.

Getting harassed by charity and political party members knocking on doors on Rhymney street

Why do they always pick Rhymney Street? Probably because it feels like one of the longest roads in Cardiff.
