Survivor star claims his sister whose death was ruled as suicide was actually murdered
He's made it his mission to 'uncover the truth'
Survivor star Joe Hunter has set out on a mission to “uncover the truth” after revealing his sister Joanna’s death was ruled as suicide. He claims she was murdered, and his emotional tribute to his sibling became the most memorable moment on Survivor season 48.
Losing his sister shaped his entire life long before Joe ever entered Survivor. He has always been really open about his sister’s death, claiming she was an alleged victim of domestic violence, and said: “The day I got the news will always be etched in my brain.”
Joe will be appearing on a new episode of 48 Hours on CBS on Saturday December 13th. He claims in the trailer: “‘Your sister is dead.’ I knew, right then, he had taken her life. From that moment on, my life changed forever. I feel my sister when I see something beautiful.”

During their younger years, Joe and Joanna would often talk about going on Survivor together. He only applied because Joanna is the “one who wanted to be here,” and revealed that she “fell in love with a man who was charming and charismatic.” He worked as a pastor.
Joe said: “I know, in my heart, Mark [Lewis] killed my sister and then he staged it to look like she hung herself.” Mark was not charged with any crime relating to Joanna’s death, to which her mother said it was “total disregard for our daughter.”

The Solano County Sheriff’s Department ruled that Joanna died by suicide within 28 minutes of arriving at the scene. However, a police officer who was involved in the case said that’s a “gigantic misconception” and that the case was “still being worked.”
The officer stands by the office’s conclusion that Joanna took her own life, but Joe stands by his belief that this “was in no way a suicide.” He described them as a “family that just wants justice for Joanna,” adding that he’s “sorry he couldn’t protect her from that monster.”
