Chris Evans reveals Avengers: Doomsday is ‘brutal’ for Steve Rogers as he asks what’s right

We all know Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, but he recently revealed that Steve goes through a particularly “brutal” story in the upcoming Marvel movie, and his return may be nothing like what we expect.

Basically, if you thought Steve had finally earned a quiet life after Avengers: Endgame, it looks like the Russo brothers have other plans.

‘The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers’

Speaking at Fan Expo Boston, Evans was asked about returning to the character and what fans can expect from Steve this time around. His answer made it pretty clear that the character is in for a rough time.

He said, “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favourite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up.”

And Doomsday apparently takes that approach even further. He added, “So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt. And this one was brutal.”

Steve Rogers is not the same man anymore

After playing the character since 2011, the actor says his understanding of Rogers has changed considerably. At first, he was focused on protecting the ideals that made Steve Captain America. Over time, though, he became more interested in his mistakes, doubts and uncertainty.

When asked by MovieWeb what he understands about Steve now that he did not when he first took the role, Evans explained, “That’s a tough question. God, I don’t know, I don’t know. In the beginning, you’re so conscious of trying to preserve these ideals because you know that’s what he stands for. And in the beginning, you’re telling the story of how it became that way. You want to make sure you’re clear about representing why he was chosen.”

He then added, “But then, once he was chosen, that’s great. Then you’ve got to find ways to drop blood a little bit and show mistakes, show confusion, and it’s almost boring to play a character who is unequivocally convinced in what you know.”

Evans further said, “It’s more interesting to see a guy who is trying to do what’s right, but doesn’t quite know what that is. That’s certainly what we do in Doomsday.”

And that might be the most interesting part of Steve’s return. We have already seen him fight for what he believes is right. Watching him struggle to work out what “right” actually means could take the character somewhere completely different.

Chris Evans did not want to return to Marvel just for the sake of it

Evans has also made it clear that coming back to Marvel was not an automatic yes. After Endgame, he heard several ideas for bringing Steve back, but none of them felt right to him. That changed when Robert Downey Jr.’s return became part of the picture.

Evans previously explained, “Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches. And they were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right.”

He added, “But all of a sudden it felt right. [Joe Russo] gave me the pitch, and Downey was baying. It just all of a sudden… it was like, ‘This is it.’”

And if Evans is right, Steve Rogers is heading into Doomsday more conflicted, more vulnerable and, apparently, more battered than ever. After Endgame, that is one comeback I genuinely cannot wait to see.
