Make no mistake, Conquest is dead. But his voice actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan teased a potential return in a new interview… perhaps for a forgotten scene set to air in Invincible season five? In season four episode five of the Prime Video series, Mark (Steven Yeun) went toe-to-toe once more with the feared Viltrumite. Much like their season three battle, it was a bloody, gut-squelching session (literally), leaving Mark with injuries that took months to heal from. But Conquest wasn’t so lucky. Despite having his literal guts spilling out from his torso, Mark managed to muster up enough strength to throttle his opponent to death. The following episode’s post-credits scene did hypebait us with a tease of Conquest’s grave, but ultimately this was nothing more than a good trolling. In the TV show much like the comics, Conquest is six feet under. Jeffrey Dean Morgan hints he’s not done with Invincible just yet However, Conquest voice actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan appeared on this week’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he didn’t shut down a potential tease for his return. The conversation came up as Dean spoke about the mechanics of making the episodes, revealing that while filming the fight scene for the Invincible season three finale, “I’ve never been sweatier in my whole life… It was a full-on workout.” He also spoke about the vulnerable “I am so lonely” speech, which was an invention for the series that builds on the character first portrayed in Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comics. “It kind of shows that Conquest has this vulnerability and he has no friends and all this sh*t, right?” he said. “And Kirkman wrote that just for me, because I was doing the role and I have this innate ability to do characters that are horrible, but ‘let’s humanise him just a little bit to confuse the audience’.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by INVINCIBLE (@invincible.hq) Here’s the interesting part. Dean added, “That was my favourite speech to give. So we’ll see what happens with Invincible, you know?” Host Josh Horowitz then interjected, “I was going to say, is there more? That sounds like a tease,” to which Dean replied, “It could be a tease.” So you’re saying there’s a chance? Of course, if true, this could be any number of things. Dean might return to voice a different Viltrumite, he could appear in a flashback scene, or the series might deviate from the comics entirely and have Conquest come back from the dead again. Robert Kirkman confirms a forgotten scene is coming in season 5 If it’s a flashback, there could be an opening when Mark confronts Cecil (Walton Goggins) about keeping Conquest alive. You see, everyone was hoping to see Mark tear Cecil a new one for his betrayal in season four, but instead he’s left dealing with far larger crises. But in a recent interview on The Escape Pod, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman revealed that a confrontation will be happening… in season five. “To me, it’s one of those things like that scene at the beginning of Return of the King that was left out of the theatrical version but was in the one with Saruman,” he explained. “They were like, ‘This feels like the addendum of the previous movie and not the beginning of the next movie, so it just doesn’t exist.’ So, there’s no resolution if you watch the theatrical cut.” Essentially, he’s comparing the confrontation to the scene of the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which resolves Saruman’s storyline after The Two Towers. Peter Jackson ultimately cut it from the theatrical release because he felt it wrapped up the previous film rather than launching the new one, leaving viewers of the cinema version without any real conclusion to Saruman’s fate. In terms of Invincible, Kirkman continued, “With everything going on at the end of season four, it just felt like it would be screeching things to a halt and and out of place.” But, he said, “Clearly that scene needs to exist and will exist in season five.” Maybe this paves the way for Conquest’s (sort of) return… but that’s for the writers to know and us to find out.
