Ever since Spider-Man: Brand New Day was released in cinemas and ended with a cliffhanger, people have been wondering whether Ned Leeds remembers Peter Parker or not. The film’s open ending has left loads of people debating what actually happened, especially after Peter and Ned finally share a big emotional moment together. And now, director Destin Daniel Cretton has finally addressed the theories surrounding Ned’s memories. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange’s spell made the entire world forget Peter Parker existed. That included his best friend Ned and the love of his life, MJ. Peter accepted that he had to start over completely alone. He moved into a small apartment, made his own suit and continued being Spider-Man without anyone knowing the real him. But Brand New Day changes things. Throughout the film, Peter slowly begins reconnecting with the people around him. And the ending, especially the moment involving Ned, has made everyone wonder if Doctor Strange’s spell might not be as permanent as everyone thought. Now, director Destin Daniel Cretton has responded to those theories Credit: Sony Pictures During an interview with Deadline, Cretton was asked directly about the ending and the huge debate over whether Ned remembers Peter Parker. When asked if he wanted to clear up the ambiguity, Cretton replied, “Do you really think you’d want me to answer that?” He then explained that the film was never trying to frustrate people with an unclear ending. Cretton said, “Listen, we’re definitely not trying to torture people with ambiguity. I feel like what’s very clear is the emotion you’re left with when we cut to black.” He added, “To me, there’s a very clear feeling of joy, just enough, and then you cut to black.” Cretton also said, “I have seen the theories, and I love the theories. I don’t want to stop that conversation by putting my opinion in the middle of it.” He also hinted that this conversation could continue when the next Spider-Man movie is developed. He said, “Knowing there will be another movie, that conversation will continue in the writer’s room as we figure out, if we figure out, what we’re going to do next.” Cretton also revealed that people’s reactions can influence future discussions, saying, “Everybody on our side is listening to everything.” He continued, “Those are conversations we’ve had in the writer’s room as well, and I think it’s fun that everybody is participating not just in analysing this movie, but potentially in creating whatever happens in the next one.” So, there’s a real chance Ned could remember Peter.
