My Life With the Walter Boys is finally returning with season three, and the showrunner of the Netflix series has teased what to expect, including a “mature” change. If you remember, the end of season two started where it began: the love triangle between Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez), Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry). Although Jackie had been secretly getting back with Alex, in the season two finale, Cole and Jackie got into an argument that ended with them confessing their love for one another. Unfortunately for them, Alex overheard their conversation. Before they could go any further, Will (Johnny Link) came riding up out of nowhere alongside an ambulance with its sirens blaring. He said something had happened to their dad, George (Marc Blucas), but My Life With the Walter Boys finished there, meaning there’s a lot to unpack in season three. Season 3 is about much more than the love triangle Credit: Netflix Netflix has promised the third chapter will pick up from these events and explore the fallout, as the Walters discover that it’s okay to go after what you want. It won’t just be the love triangle causing problems either. Alex is set to throw himself into rodeo riding while Cole begins pursuing a new path after a race car driver spots his potential. Jackie, meanwhile, focuses on a community project in Silver Falls, but her life is thrown into further turmoil when a childhood friend from New York arrives, forcing her to confront the world she left behind. Between George’s fate, the fallout from Jackie’s confession and a host of new challenges, season three looks set to push the characters in a much more grown-up direction. And this is exactly what showrunner Melanie Halsall said in a conversation with Swooon. “We really wanted to elevate the show for season 3 in every respect, and I think we achieved that,” Halsall explained. “We wanted to have slightly more mature storylines, and we wanted to show that the show had grown with our cast and our characters.” The showrunner elaborated, “I think we wanted to delve a bit more deeply into who they were [and] what motivates them, as well as the romance stuff. So we really wanted to kind of get those layers and really push those. “And we also wanted to achieve an all-round sophistication in terms of the look and the feel of the show as well.” As for the love triangle, Halsall said of Jackie and Alex’s relationship last year that we’ve all had those types of romances where the person is perfect on paper, but “that extra special saucy something isn’t there as much as you would like it to be.” “She starts off that relationship fully in it and wants to be with him, but as time goes on, it becomes more of a… they’re trying really hard to be in it and to make that relationship feel the way it should feel when you’re madly in love with somebody,” she added. “But I think she does love him.” That said, she did note that “everything’s still to play for”, and that’s certainly true for season three.
