While celebrating Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s record-breaking box office opening, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has addressed the MCU’s recent misses, arguing that audiences still turn out for stories that resonate. In case you missed it, the fourth MCU Spider-Man movie raked in an eye-watering $360 million at the North American box office in its opening weekend, officially beating the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame at $357 million. Globally, its tally jumped to $932 million – in just three days. This is a huge result, not only for the Tom Holland led film series but for Marvel overall. It’s no secret that the MCU has struggled to capture the zeitgeist in the same way it did 10 years ago, with talks of superhero fatigue emerging after a series of box office flops including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four. On what he’s learned about Marvel’s recent misses, Feige explained, “I can only speak to Brand New Day, and audiences responded to a movie that’s well-crafted and well-made. “They don’t always do that. But when they do, it’s a nice reminder that success builds success. The Odyssey, Toy Story 5 and all the great movies that have been in theaters this year reminds people there’s nothing like a shared experience. There’s nothing like a moment for the whole globe to come together.” But the Marvel boss was further pressed about whether the misses indicate audiences are getting tired of the same stories, to which he replied, “Many things can be true at once. “I think last year’s Fantastic Four looked and sounded like nothing that had been done in a superhero movie before, and it only [grossed] $521 million. “Brand New Day is very directly a part four. It picks up right after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and yet it tells a story that resonates. “It’s ultimately about loneliness and the dangers of staying in our apartments by ourselves, looking at our phones. That resonates across cultures and across the globe right now.” The good news is that Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s success provides a positive outlook for the future of the MCU, as Feige highlighted. “For Avengers: Doomsday and X Men, it bodes very well. When a shared universe works, these are the results.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
