It wouldn’t be a Taylor Sheridan show without some drama. Dutton Ranch star Ed Harris feels he’s been “misled” by the series, so where does that leave season two? It wasn’t that long ago that the flagship Yellowstone show was overshadowed by reports of creative tensions between Sheridan and lead star Kevin Costner, who ended up making an abrupt exit from the final season. But that’s been and gone, and Sheridan’s neo-western TV universe continues to expand, with Kayce Dutton spinoff Marshals recently airing and prequel 1944 in development. More recently, we got the first season of Dutton Ranch, which sees Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they ditch Montana for South Texas, only to find themselves dragged into fresh disputes. Although the show is based on characters Sheridan created, he’s not involved in the writers’ room, but that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth sailing. Credit: Paramount+ Earlier this year, Dutton Ranch showrunner Chad Feehan was let go from the series, meaning that while he’s credited for season one, he won’t continue for the second chapter. Sources told Matthew Belloni at the time that Feehan “clashed on set with stars Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly and other key players.” “Sheridan, producer David Glasser, and the stars weren’t happy, so Feehan’s out, and Sheridan and Glasser will likely elevate another season one writer to the showrunner gig,” Belloni wrote. Paramount has since renewed Dutton Ranch for season two, with Benjamin Cavell set to take over from Feehan as showrunner. But that might not be the end of the drama… Is Ed Harris leaving Dutton Ranch? Credit: Paramount+ No, as far as the latest reports go, Ed Harris isn’t dropping out of Dutton Ranch. In fact, his character Everett McKinney is set to have a more significant role in season two. The reason this question has come up is thanks to a new interview in which Harris said he felt “misled” when it came to the importance of his role in the Yellowstone spinoff. Speaking to Variety, the actor explained, “Midway through this first season, I was ready to say, ‘Get me the f**k out of here,’ to tell you the truth.” “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do – and that I was one of the four main characters,” he continued. “And that wasn’t really the case.” Harris even spoke to someone about the issue, although he didn’t name who it was. “I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh,’” he explained. Since he signed on for two seasons, that means he’ll be back for another round. And it seems it may be a better experience for the Westworld star. It just was a little frustrating, to tell you the truth,” he added. “When I watched the season, it’s fine. I thought it’s pretty good. It seemed like I was relatively important to the story, but the doing of it didn’t feel that way. “The thing that really pissed me off, to tell you the truth, is the first episode, or the second, one of the things they told me before I signed on: ‘Hey, you get to sing in the bar.’” Even though they filmed him singing for the scene, it was cut. “I’m like, ‘F**k you people.’ They said it was too ‘up’ for the dark ending of the episode. That, to me, is reason enough to say, ‘I’m voiding my contract.’” Still, for now, Harris is signed on for season two, as he confirmed by saying filming is set to start in February.
