*Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Dutton Ranch finale* After Dutton Ranch’s explosive season one finale, Carter’s fate has become one of the biggest talking points. While he survives the episode, Kelly Reilly has revealed the shocking cliffhanger will drive season two. Throughout the Yellowstone spinoff so far, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) have found themselves drawn into the dangerous world surrounding the neighbouring 10 Petal Ranch. What initially looked like an opportunity for a fresh start quickly turned into a cartel conspiracy, with ranch owner Beulah (Annette Bening) revealing she had become entangled in a fentanyl smuggling operation years earlier through crime boss Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo). By the finale, tensions have reached breaking point: Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) is shot dead, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) discovers she’s pregnant, and Mariano decides to hit Beth and Rip where it hurts most: Carter (Finn Little). So, is Carter dead? Credit: Paramount+ No, you’ll be pleased to know that Carter doesn’t die in Dutton Ranch episode nine, ‘El Padrino’. After briefly running away from Beth and Rip following an argument, Carter reunites with Oreana, with the pair planning to leave together. But before they get the chance, Mariano’s men abduct Carter, intending to use him as leverage against Beth and Rip after the couple uncover the cartel’s operation. The season ends with Carter alive but kidnapped, with Mariano calling Beth to say, “I have your boy.” When she tells Rip, he points out that it’s them he wants, to which she says, “Then they’re gonna f**king get us.” In short, this perfectly sets up a major conflict for Dutton Ranch season two, which Paramount has given the greenlight to. Speaking to TV Insider about the finale, Kelly Reilly said the kidnapping marks a huge turning point for Beth and Rip. “We’re going to see them tear up Texas to get him back,” she said after the finale, while Cole Hauser added that Carter’s abduction is exactly what pushes the pair back onto the offensive. Reilly also hinted that fans already know what Beth means when she declares, “They want us, then they’re going to have us.” How Carter’s kidnapping sets up Dutton Ranch season 2 Credit: Paramount+ While season one deliberately showed Beth and Rip struggling to adapt to their new life, Reilly says the finale finally unleashes the versions of the characters that Yellowstone fans know best. Hauser explained that the couple have spent the first season “on their back foot” after losing everything in Montana, but Carter’s kidnapping changes that overnight. “When he gets kidnapped, it’s game on,” he said. “It’s a good way to open another season of the show, to see them back on offense.” Reilly echoed that sentiment, saying she’s excited to see Beth and Rip take control again after spending much of season one reacting to events around them. “I don’t think there’s going to be any stopping them,” she said. The stars also teased that season two won’t simply focus on revenge. Beulah and Everett are expected to become much bigger players, with Ed Harris taking on a significantly expanded role, while Mariano will emerge as Beth and Rip’s biggest threat yet. Reilly added, “I think season two is going to feel very much more Ed’s show. This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters, five.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
