Director Uwe Boll has pushed back on a report claiming Armie Hammer was in tears over Citizen Vigilante and its hateful message. Earlier this week, the latest Puck newsletter from Matthew Belloni included quotes from a source within Hammer’s team, who claimed that the actor cried when he first saw the film in full. “The first time he saw it, he was in tears,” they told Belloni. “He called me and said, ‘F**k. This is hateful, disgusting.’” Before Citizen Vigilante released, Hammer – who was blacklisted from Hollywood but not charged following multiple allegations of sexual assault – said Boll had reached out to him to offer him the lead role. Instead, he received a 50-page treatment, questioning, “Where’s the rest?” Hammer went ahead with the project regardless, resulting in Citizen Vigilante, which has faced widespread criticism for its anti-immigrant message. The insider told Belloni that Hammer was horrified by the movie, adding, “I think he knew it certainly leaned toward the right, but Uwe works in a very frantic way. “It’s not like he sent him a hundred-page script. When he saw the final product, he was, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made,’ and he freaked the f**k out.” However, Boll has now spoken to TMZ to shut down these claims, saying that the actor attended the screening of the film at the American Film Market, took part in multiple promo interviews, and led the Q&A at its first public screening. Boll argued that it’s just “noise” due to the messaging of the film, adding, “Some people will love it, others will disagree with it – that is true of many films. My job as a filmmaker is to tell the story I set out to tell, and audiences can decide for themselves.” It’s true that Citizen Vigilante has gained popularity among the right, with Elon Musk sharing it on his X account for 48 hours and Tristan Tate asking to be in the sequel. Boll has continued to stand by unfounded claims to defend his stance, having previously told Hollywood Elsewhere, “In the very end we will have two choices: reduce Islamic migrants or not, and if not… they will take over in around 30 years and then will start killing everybody who is not a convert to Islam.” Beyond the troubling sentiment behind the movie, it is, much like Boll’s previous cinematic flops, not well made. This point was raised in a recent Reddit AMA Boll took part in. Initially, the filmmaker joined in on the public roasting, but he later lashed out at the critics. Hi reddit. I am Uwe Boll. AMA. byu/UweBollAMA inmovies “Guys, why a lot of you are stuck in the past. You love to hate and trash me,” he said, before urging people to watch his films and “open your eyes.” “Forget my name and just watch the movies. Look at the ratings at Amazon and you see what the REAL AUDIENCE believes,” he continued. “You are so in love of bashing me that you forgot yourself. I wish you all a great evening and now watch soccer in TV instead of wasting my time here.” The AMA was locked after just one day.
