Heated Rivalry fans are calling out Off Campus for copying the marketing strategy of their favourite show, and the evidence is actually so convincing.

Ice hockey romance stories Heated Rivalry and Off Campus have both gone viral in the past few months, and it’s caused a bit of drama online. Many have accused Off Campus of being a straight “rip-off” of the queer love story.  It’s important to note that Off Campus was filmed a year ago, so it wasn’t directly connected to the success of Heated Rivalry, which happened late last year.

One X user has pointed out similarities between the marketing campaigns for Heated Rivalry and Off Campus, sharing screenshots of promotional photo shoots for both shows. It was recently announced that Mika Abdalla and Stephen Kalyn will have their own Quinn series, Rent Free, just like Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie did during the press for Heated Rivalry.

Off Campus cast members have also done promotional collabs for Verizon and F1.

“No shade, but it absolutely does get to a point…even the stylists and hairstylists like Jesus,” the post’s caption said.

Many people in the replies agree with the original poster, pointing out the similarities. But some Off Campus fans are defending their favourites, calling the comparisons a “reach”.

“To the people hell-bent on implying I’m ‘angry’ and need to focus on my own show, I fear I’ve watched both shows, and off-campus is fine, it’s just wild seeing the press tour be the exact same, including their personal groomers/stylists. rest! ” the original poster added after some backlash.

Off Campus showrunner Louisa Levy has spoken to Radio Times about the comparisons between the two shows, but she’s clear that there’s no direct inspiration.

“We were actually mid-way through shooting our show when I first heard about it,” she said. “So, I was excited to see it even before it ever launched, and I love that it’s a queer romance. I think that’s so amazing.

“We need more of that in the world, and we are obviously coexisting as hockey romances, but that’s kind of where the similarities end. I love that we get to be such different shows in the same general space.”
