After denouncing JK Rowling’s views, Nick Frost has a blunt response for anyone who thinks he’s being a hypocrite for joining the Harry Potter show cast. Frost is joining the upcoming HBO series as none other than Rubeus Hagrid, following in the footsteps of the late, great Robbie Coltrane. The show is set to start from the very beginning, introducing a whole new cast to the next generation, with each season telling the story of an entry to the book series. There’s been much talk around the controversy surrounding author JK Rowling, who has become known in recent years for her anti-trans views. It’s estimated that she’ll make tens of millions of pounds each year as an executive producer and the primary rights holder, sparking plenty of backlash online. A number of the adult cast members have spoken about their stance on the matter, including Frost, who told The Observer last year, “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.” Now, he’s elaborated on this in an interview with The Sunday Times, and he’s not too fussed if people think he’s a hypocrite for still taking the job. “I can’t control all that stuff. I only know what I feel, and I don’t really have to justify it to anyone,” he told the outlet. “No one is ever going to be happy all the time. And I think what I have learnt over the past seven years is don’t even bother. Keep yourself true, that’s all you can do.” The actor also acknowledged that even taking over from Coltrane will be controversial for some Harry Potter fans. “I’ve tried to take what Robbie did and honour that… but also I’ve got eight hours here each series, while Robbie had two and a half – there has to be a bit more to him. So: he’s from Bristol. He’s nice, a bit quiet,” he said. Frost went on to say that he’s drawing inspiration from two unique sources: his uncle Emy, who got scarlet fever when he was 10 in the 1950s, and also from Michael Clarke Duncan’s John Coffey, the “violent but childlike” character from The Green Mile. “Some people won’t like it. They’ll go, ‘Not my Hagrid.’ And that is all right,” he added. For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page. Featured images credit: HBO/X Post navigation Next story
