On 24th April, news broke that Helena Bonham Carter wouldn’t be in The White Lotus anymore. Reports emerged that she’d exited the production during filming. Obviously, we were all desperate to find out the tea. We finally know the actual reason why Helena Bonham Carter won’t be in The White Lotus season four, and it’s brutal. So, season four of HBO‘s The White Lotus is being filmed as we speak in the French Riviera. Helena Bonham Carter was set to play a washed-up celebrity who is desperate to make a comeback, and is in France for the Cannes Film Festival. Her character was linked to the season’s overarching theme of fame. After spending less than a week on set, Helena Bonham Carter gave up on the project. According to Variety, she left over “creative differences”. Apparently, Mike White (the creator of The White Lotus) was envisioning a “boisterous performance”. A spokesperson told Deadline: “With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. A chunk of the huge cast for The White Lotus season three(Credit: HBO) “HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.” Mike White has already replaced Helena Bonham Carter with Laura Dern. It sounds as if she won’t just be reading out Helena Bonham Carter’s lines – Mike White is developing a different character for Laura Dern to take the place of Helena Bonham Carter’s character within the wider story.
