There’s a huge age gap, so how old is The Love Hypothesis cast compared to the characters?

Happy The Love Hypothesis day to everyone who celebrates! After a long wait, Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance is finally on our screens, and the first thing you’ll notice is that Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen have a pretty significant age gap. So, here’s how old The Love Hypothesis cast are compared to their characters.

The new Prime Video adaptation stars Lili Reinhart as Olive and Tom Bateman as Adam, with Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan also joining the cast.

The story follows Olive, a biology PhD student, who impulsively kisses intimidating professor Adam Carlsen before they end up agreeing to a fake relationship. But Adam is much, much older than Olive, and the cast are also quite a bit older than their characters. So, here’s how old the The Love Hypothesis cast actually are.

Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith

Lili Reinhart: 30

Olive Smith: 26

Lili Reinhart just turned 30 a few days ago, making her four years older than Olive. Olive is a 26-year-old biology PhD student at Stanford who is focused on her research and has very little experience when it comes to dating.

Tom Bateman as Dr Adam Carlsen

Tom Bateman: 37

Dr Adam Carlsen: 34

Tom Bateman is 37. He is only three years older than Adam, who is a 34-year-old tenured biology professor. Adam has a reputation for being intimidating, blunt and notoriously difficult. He meets Olive after she impulsively kisses him, and they eventually agree to pretend they are dating.

Olive and Adam have an 8-year age gap in the book, whereas Lili and Tom have a 7-year difference in real life.

Rachel Marsh as Anh Pham

Rachel Marsh: 34

Anh Pham: 26

Rachel Marsh plays Anh, Olive’s best friend, in the movie. Rachel is 34, whereas Anh, who is also a graduate student, is a similar age to her best friend Olive.

Anh is the reason Olive ends up pretending to date Adam in the first place. She has feelings for Jeremy, and Olive’s decision to convince her that she has moved on sets the entire fake-dating storyline into motion.

Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy Langley

Nicholas Duvernay: 27

Jeremy Langley: 26

Nicholas Duvernay is 27 and plays Jeremy Langley in the film.  Jeremy is Anh’s love interest and one of the main reasons Olive fakes-dates Adam. 

Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm Browne

Jaboukie Young-White: 32

Malcolm Browne: 26

Jaboukie Young-White is 32 and plays Malcolm Browne. Malcolm is Olive’s roommate and one of her closest friends. He also starts dating another professor, Dr Holden Rodriguez, during the story. 

Arty Froushan as Dr Tom Benton

Arty Froushan: 33

Dr Tom Benton: 34

Arty Froushan is 33 and plays Dr Tom Benton in the movie. Tom is an associate professor at Harvard and is also Adam Carlson’s friend, so they are similar in age.
