Who really killed Evert in The Perfect Lie? The book reveals what actually happened to him

The Netflix series leaves Evert’s death looking like a suicide, but the original book actually explains what really happened and who killed him.

The Perfect Lie is based on Saskia Noort’s novel De Eetclub, where Evert’s death is the mystery that starts exposing all the secrets inside the dinner club.

So, what actually happened to him?

Evert dies after a fire at his home. At first, everything points to suicide. As per Saskia Noort’s official synopsis, Evert drugs his wife and children, drinks vodka and sets the house on fire before dying.

But Karen starts questioning that version. She discovers that Evert’s marriage to Babette was already falling apart. He was having an affair with Hanneke and wanted to leave Babette. That gives Karen a reason to wonder why Evert would suddenly choose to kill himself.

There’s also another major clue: Hanneke. Hanneke knew about Evert and Babette’s relationship and was getting closer to the truth. Later, she falls from a hotel balcony and ends up in a coma. Karen starts suspecting that what happened to Hanneke wasn’t an accident either.

Basically, the two incidents are connected. Someone wanted Evert dead, and then Hanneke became a problem because she knew too much.

So, who killed Evert?

The book reveals that Babette was behind Evert’s death. Her motive is linked to Simon, with whom she had been involved. Evert was also planning to leave her, so his death removed the person standing in the way of the life she wanted.

And she was also responsible for Hanneke’s fall because Hanneke knew too much about what had happened.

Karen eventually finds evidence linking Babette to the crimes and plans to take it to the police. That leads to the final confrontation involving Karen, Simon and Babette. Babette wants Simon to kill Karen, but he refuses. During the confrontation, Babette falls from the building while Karen saves the baby.

So, basically, Evert was murdered, and Babette was the person responsible. The whole suicide story was there to hide what she had done.
