Just when you thought Jackie and Cole might finally find their way back to each other, the Netflix show delivered its most devastating cliffhanger yet. So is Cole dead in My Life with the Walter Boys?

The season three finale ends with Cole speeding off to find Jackie after realising he made a huge mistake by breaking up with her. But before he gets the chance to tell her how he really feels, rival racer Danvers deliberately rams his car not once, but twice, sending it rolling off the road. The final shot leaves Cole trapped inside the wreckage as the screen cuts to black.

So, is Cole dead in My Life with the Walter Boys?

Right now, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed Cole’s fate. The finale deliberately leaves things up in the air, with viewers never finding out whether he survives the crash. But if you’re already panicking, there’s actually a pretty big reason to think Cole isn’t going anywhere.

For starters, My Life with the Walter Boys has already been renewed for season four, and creator Melanie Halsall has been talking about Cole’s story as if it’s far from over.

Speaking to Tudum about the shocking ending, Halsall admitted, “Danvers running him off the road felt like the right place to leave him. I hope he’s alright for season four.”

It’s obviously not a direct confirmation that Cole survives, but it’s definitely not the sort of thing you’d expect the show’s creator to say if she’d just killed off one of the series’ biggest characters.

Noah LaLonde has also spoken about the finale, explaining that Cole’s crash wasn’t meant to come completely out of nowhere. “I’m never shocked with how much is hanging in the balance on this show,” he said. He compared Cole’s racing storyline to “Chekhov’s gun”. It’s the storytelling idea that if something important is introduced early on, it’s going to matter later.

But he added, “The way Cole actually ends up getting hurt is not a race. It’s a crazed competitor gone rogue.”

Cole’s crash is only the beginning of season four

Even if Cole survives, it doesn’t sound like the drama is slowing down any time soon. The crash happens just as Cole finally decides to stop pushing Jackie away. After spending most of the season believing he wasn’t good enough for her, he realises he wants to fight for their relationship instead.

Halsall explained why Cole broke up with Jackie in the first place. She said, “Cole’s fatal flaw is his insecurity and his inability to believe in himself.”

“He feels like he’s worthless and Jackie stops him feeling like that. But when Richard and Eliot get in his head, that’s disastrous because Cole’s going to believe it.”

LaLonde also said, “Reading the scripts, I was like, ‘Just tell her why you’re doing this.’ But in Cole’s head, it just feels too far gone. He’s decided that he’s not right for her. He’s not good enough for her.”
