Fans of Weapons are about to get a lot more answers about one of the film’s most mysterious characters, as director Zach Cregger has confirmed a prequel centred around Aunt Gladys is officially moving forward. The upcoming film, currently being developed under the working title Gladys, will explore the origins of the character played by Amy Madigan, whose chilling performance as Aunt Gladys became one of the biggest talking points from the 2025 horror hit. Warner Bros Speaking during Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Cregger opened up about why he wanted to keep Gladys’ past hidden in Weapons, while teasing that there is a much bigger story waiting to be told. “First of all, I’m really excited about the Gladys movie, and I loved working with Amy,” Cregger told the audience. “I loved that character.” He explained that keeping Gladys mysterious was an important part of Weapons’ storytelling, saying: “For the movie Weapons, it really made a lot of sense not to dive into her backstory because the device of Weapons was to keep her very mysterious.” Warner Bros But now, Cregger says the prequel will finally dig into how Gladys became the person audiences met in Weapons, and it sounds like it will be just as unpredictable as the original. “However, there’s an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as,” he said. “It’s got a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things, like Weapons does. I think it’s going to be great. “The script is in progress now, but we’re taking that super seriously, and it’s moving in the right direction,” Cregger said. “So yeah, it’s being written, is the short answer.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
