What to watch next: These 2025 films debuted with a perfect 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes
It’s been a solid year for Hollywood blockbusters
Rotten Tomatoes is not a mystical platform that guarantees you’ll enjoy a movie, but if a film debuts with 100 per cent on the platform, it’s a pretty good sign that it’s been widely well-received. We’ve still got a few months left to go in 2025, but this year, especially, there seems to be more 100 per cent debuts than ever before.
These films are basically the best of the best, at least where Rotten Tomatoes is concerned.
Weapons
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 94 per cent
Weapons is the 2025 horror film that Jordan Peele sacked his team over, and after seeing the fanfare it created upon release, I’m not massively surprised. The film takes place in a small town where all the kids from a single class suddenly vanish, leading to a townwide manhunt that stumbles upon a supernatural element in wacky glasses.
All roads eventually lead back to Aunt Gladys, a super old witch who is as terrifying as she is iconic.
The Long Walk
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 96 per cent
2025 has been the year for original horror flicks, with The Long Walk entering as a latecomer to the horror-off we’re set to see during award season. This dystopian thriller had a very simple premise: People must continue walking, maintaining a speed of at least three miles per hour or risk execution.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100 per cent
Most Read
This one’s a little tricky because it’s not actually out yet, though it did debut with 100 per cent ahead of its December release. The third instalment in the Knives Out franchise, the Netflix project sees Daniel Craig return alongside an ensemble cast of Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
No Other Choice
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100 per cent
A South Korean satirical black comedy, No Other Choice follows a man’s desperate attempt to hold down a job. When that doesn’t work, he sets out to eliminate his competition in brutal fashion. The best part? It features Squid Game’s Lee Byung-hun in the starring role.
28 Years Later
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 88 per cent
A direct continuation of the 28 Days Later franchise, and a prequel to the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer helmed this critically acclaimed project from earlier this year. If that wasn’t enough to sell you on the film, there’s also an enormous zombie penis. Sold?
The Naked Gun
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 88 per cent
Starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, The Naked Gun is about a police man trying to save his police department from shutting down. It’s raunchy, hilarious, and probably the best instalment in The Naked Gun franchise.
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100 per cent
Set for release in October, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is – you guessed it – a Bruce Springsteen biopic.
Bugonia
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 92 per cent
Emma Stone recently thawed from her hibernation for Bugonia, and just in time for awards season! It follows a high-powered CEO, played by Emma, who is kidnapped by two conspiracy nuts who believe she is an alien.
The Smashing Machine
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 80 per cent
A rare Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson win, The Smashing Machine is another biopic about the career of MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt is also in it, if The Rock has put you off.
Sinners
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 97 per cent
Ryan Coogler rarely misses, and Sinners was simply the latest stop on his genius brain. Starring Michael B. Jordan as gangster twins, Sinners is set amidst KKK lynchings, rampant violent racism, and segregation in Mississippi. The horror element comes in the form of the sexist Irish vampire you’ll ever see and a recently turned Hailee Steinfeld – need I say more?
Urchin
Current rotten tomatoes score: 97 per cent
In his directorial debut, Harris Dickinson tells the story of a homeless drug addict struggling to regain control of his life after being arrested. It’s gritty and powerful, but early reviews also highlighted a dark humour and familiarity to it.
The Testament of Ann Lee
Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 88 per cent
A historical drama, The Testament of Ann Lee is about (shocker) Ann Lee, the founding leader of the Shakers’ religious sect in the 18th century. Amongst reviews from film critics, one thing was clear: This film is really, really strange.
