The Bone Temple director reveals hung zombie and Dr. Kelson are a ‘big part of the film’

The world of 28 Years Later will ‘expand’ even further

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is shaping up to be a wild ride, and director Nia DaCosta has revealed that Samson, the monstrously hung zombie, and Dr. Kelson’s relationship is a big part of the movie.

The movie picks up shortly after 28 Years Later, following young Spike as he moves between the worlds of Sir Jimmy Crystal and his gang of Jimmies, and Dr. Kelson with his Alpha virus-carrier, Samson. Caught in the middle of their clash, Spike sets the stage for loads of chaos, violence, and unexpected twists.

So, what did the director say?

Speaking with Rolling Stone, DaCosta promised that The Bone Temple will expand the story beyond just these characters. “The world expands,” she said. “We get a glimpse of other types of the 28-years-later effect.” She added that the action will live up to the “cover-your-eyes-scary” moments of 28 Years Later as well as the original series. “As a viewer, I love gore and body horror and visceral effects,” DaCosta said.

But it’s not just about expanding the world. DaCosta also explained that Samson, the Alpha “hung” zombie, isn’t just running around being scary, his relationship with Dr. Kelson actually drives a lot of the movie. “We’ve seen Samson ripping people’s heads off,” she said. “But Kelson’s a kook, and he’s doing what he wants to do.”

The film goes deeper into their evolving relationship, showing that Kelson regularly sedates Samson but never kills him. This strange, tense connection is shown in the trailer released today. DaCosta teases that their dynamic is a “big part of the movie.”

The trailer also shows Samson wearing a loincloth rather than appearing fully nude, unlike the previous film. This change has sparked discussion online, with viewers expressing disappointment over the absence of the “massive package” that made the character such a viral sensation last time.

As long as we get to see more of the hung zombie, whichever way he appears, I’m fine with it.
