She’s getting dragged for Wednesday, so here’s a brutal ranking of Lady Gaga’s acting roles

The concept of being in Wednesday for under two minutes and still managing to be bad

Lady Gaga is an Oscar nominated actress as well as a Golden Raspberry nominated actress at the Razzies. What does this mean? it means that Lady Gaga acting in anything is always cause for interest – but you might be fronted with an abomination or something totally beautiful. After much fanfare, today marks the long awaited day where Lady Gaga actually debuts in Wednesday season two after the anticlimax of us all realising she wouldn’t be in last month’s first half. Let’s just say it’s not been the most successful guest starring role – with the Telegraph review bluntly stating that even Gaga can’t dampen the season. Yikes. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of all the seven Lady Gaga acting roles ranked from worst to best – including her new turn as Rosaline Rotwood in Wednesday season two.

7. Machete Kills (2013)

Lady Gaga played La Cameleon – one of the disguises of Machete Kills’ shapeshifting villains. It’s only a small role and it’s all very music video coded – as you’d expect from the heightened directing style of Robert Rodriguez. She isn’t in it long but her line delivery is corny as hell. She was nommed for the Golden Raspberry award for this one so, the less said the better.

6. Wednesday (2025)

I literally feel like Pam from Gavin and Stacey when Mick was on the telly. IS THAT… IT!? Some very important journalism worked out that she is on screen delivering lines for one minute and 52 seconds. Atrocious after so much hype and the fact she’s literally released a promo single The Dead Dance to support the season and build more hype. Which to be fair, is the least she could do after she received a huge bump of success on album track Bloody Mary after the Wednesday dance went viral with it on TikTok.

Gaga plays the ghostly dead teacher Rosaline Rotwood and the effects are giving PlayStation one game. Where’s the Netflix budget? She’s better than this.

5. Joker: Folie a Deux (2024)

There was so much hype around Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie á Deux. The first Joker film was acclaimed! Oscar nominated! What could possibly go wrong!? Everything it seems. She did her best I guess, but this role was boring and the film was a complete misfire and one of the biggest flops of the year. Everyone pretends it didn’t exist.

4. Sin City: A Dame to Kill for (2014)

The second linkup with Robert Rodriguez was more successful. Gaga plays Bertha, working in a diner. She chews the scenery up excellently and makes the most of a tiny cameo and the stylised nature of it all in the glossy black and white just feels so correct. Short and sweet.

3. American Horror Story

Lady Gaga coming in as the big name to replace the large Jessica Lange sized hole in American Horror Story after its premiere star left following Freakshow was nothing short of an apocalypse for me. One of my favourite pop stars in my favourite TV show on air at that time? Bliss. Look, it is what it is. Lady Gaga sort of plays Lady Gaga – aka the Countess –  vampiric hotel owner who is somewhere morally grey in the story. Hotel is slated for being style over substance, but with Lady Gaga at the helm of one of her most distinctive acting roles – that style is truly a cut above.

She also returned in Roanoke, the following season, as Scathach – an immortal bloodthirsty witch.

2. House of Gucci (2022)

Take all the nonsense out the question and take the fact that this film was a three star mess – and you have to admit Lady Gaga went all in for it. And we can’t take that away from her. She was so passionate about her role as Patrizia Reggiani – the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who arranged a hitman to murder him – that the press circuit promo she did for it made the Wicked one look tame. There’s much to ridicule, but it truly is a great campy turn from Lady Gaga and I have to get it ranked second best out of all her acting roles.

1. A Star is Born (2018)

Maybe it was a fluke. Maybe the time when Lady Gaga gave a truly excellent Oscar winning performance was because she was playing a somewhat fictionalised story that resembled a journey she’d taken on herself. But in 2018, god – this felt amazing. Here was a pop star proving themselves seriously as an acting tour de force – and though she’s never hit the heights again of how stunningly she plays out Ally’s story, you cannot deny that A Star is Born is a triumph. Every song a smash, every scene wonderfully played and her chemistry with Bradley Cooper made for magic on screen. She absolutely shone.
