Tom Felton was asked about JK Rowling’s views and he’s getting dragged for his response

The question came after Felton was confirmed to be reprising his role of Draco Malfoy on stage

Tom Felton was last week announced as stepping back into the greased back blond locks of Draco Malfoy, the only character he’s known for in the entirety of his acting career, as he reprises the role on stage in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. But in what should have been a big moment for Tom Felton, the actor has come under fire after he was asked about how he feels working for a JK Rowling property as her views on transgender rights continue to cause major division online and got dragged for his response.

Tom Felton is the first actor from the Harry Potter films to reprise the role on stage in Cursed Child, and whilst I’m sure the big casting was set to make a reaction online – I’m not quite sure this is what producers were hoping for.

‘I’m not really that attuned to it’

@varietymagazine Tom Felton says the controversy around J.K. Rowling’s political views doesn’t impact him: “I’m not really that attuned to it…I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. She’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.” #TonyAwards ♬ original sound – Variety

Tom Felton was on the red carpet when he was interviewed by Variety for a clip on their TikTok. The interviewer asks “Did the Twitterverse controversy around JK Rowling’s views impact you at all or impact your work in the [Harry Potter] world at all?”

Tom Felton replied “No, I can’t say it does. I’m not really that attuned to it. The only thing I remind myself is I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, here I am in New York and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. She’s responsible for that, and so I’m incredibly grateful.”

Before this interview regarding how he feels about JK Rowling and her views, the announcement of Tom Felton reprising Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter stage play was already met with a dragging online – with one particular savage tweet saying he has “the most depressing career”. Ouch.

But this answer just rubbed people up the wrong way even further. One viral tweet calling out Tom says “this is what privilege looks like, and we shouldn’t ignore how much harm looking the other way because things don’t affect us directly does.” Another savagely said “Imagine your career highlight being the role you played when you were 12. Congrats Tom Felton you made it into the list of top 10 bums of all time.”

Many are highlighting the contrast of how Tom Felton has not followed suit with other high profile Harry Potter performers who have vocally called out JK Rowling and distanced themselves from her and the franchise as they show support for transgender people.

Previously, Tom Felton has said he’s “pro human rights across the board” and that he doesn’t have “much time for anything that is not those things”.
