Jack Black forced to speak out after A Minecraft Movie ‘chicken jockey’ trend chaos

A Minecraft Movie might be a total trainwreck, but you can’t deny the cultural impact it’s had. Critics absolutely trashed it, yet it’s pulling in so much money that it’s already beaten the Mario movie’s opening weekend box office numbers for a video game adaptation. The ridiculous ‘chicken jockey’ bit from the film has exploded in cinemas to the point where it’s gotten completely out of control. The director Jared Hess commented on the phenomenon, and now Jack Black has spoke out on the chicken jockey trend saga in the Minecraft movie. Which is apt, considering it’s his line that causes it!

If you’re out of the loop, the chicken jockey thing comes straight from the Minecraft game the movie’s based on. In the game, there’s this insanely rare event where a baby zombie spawns riding a chicken. It’s got just a 0.25% chance of happening in a zombie group, which makes it one of those blink-and-you-miss-it moments that the movie decided to run wild with. Jack Black’s character says chicken jockey in the movie, which causes a frenzy. He’s the instigator – albeit, an unintentional one.

Jack Black has personally entered a cinema in the states before the cinema aired a screening of A Minecraft Movie and said “For today’s presentation of A Minecraft Movie, please no throwing popped corn, no lapis lazuli and also absolutely no chicken jockey!” He posted the video himself to his social media. His words were well and truly NOT heeded, however.

Last week, A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess commented on it too. “It’s been so bananas,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been way too fun. People are sending me these really hilarious speeches that a lot of teenagers are giving right before the movie. It’s so hysterical, man. I’m staying up way too late.”

He then spoke out about how in an instance the police had to get called after people doing the trend caused so much chaos that they vandalised the cinema.

“It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” Hess continued. “It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious.

“I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”

Some cinemas have reported that the trend has caused them to ban unaccompanied kids and teens from screenings of the film. One person posted online “Theatre employee here. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE just don’t be obnoxious I worked both opening days and it has been a living nightmare. Nothing wrong with cheering during big moments but don’t be swearing.”
