The Minecraft ‘chicken jockey’ trend’s got so out of hand the film’s director has had to speak out
Police have been getting called to cinemas to deal with it
The Minecraft movie might be utter garbage, but you can’t say it’s not been a cultural phenomenon. It’s had a piss poor rating from the critics, but the movie is raking in so much cash that Minecraft has overtaken the Mario movie for box office revenue in opening weekends for a video game adaptation. Not only that, but the silly ‘chicken jockey’ trend from the Minecraft movie has taken over cinemas so hard that it’s got completely out of hand and the director himself has had to comment on it.
For those uninitiated, the chicken jockey trend in the Minecraft film that director Jared Hess had to speak on actually stems from the game the movie was based on. In the game, there’s a really rare thing that has a chance of happening where a baby zombie rides on a chicken. This is a super rare thing to happen in the game, with a 0.25 per cent chance of a baby zombie existing amongst a zombie horde.
It’s causing mayhem
When it happens in the film, the chicken jockey trend booted off because those watching A Minecraft Movie lose their minds in the cinema and go crazy. Jack Black says the line in the film which prompts fans to get up, screaming it and genuinely causing chaos.

Chicken jockey vibes in game
Director Jared Hess says the Minecraft trend has been causing him to lose sleep, as the viral videos just go around social media causing pandemonium. Losing sleep perhaps, but raking in the cash.

“It’s been so bananas,” he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been way too fun. People are sending me these really hilarious speeches that a lot of teenagers are giving right before the movie. It’s so hysterical, man. I’m staying up way too late.”
He then spoke out about how in an instance the police had to get called after people doing the trend caused so much chaos that they vandalised the cinema.
“It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” Hess continued. “It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious.
“I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.”
Hess said he didn’t expect the chicken jockey trend to take off so much from that scene in the movie.
“It’s just a bonanza,” he added. “I’m just so happy that people are finding joy in going back to cinemas and seeing things as a community, as a group of people. It’s like we’ve become so isolated on our devices, and it’s just fun to experience things as a group of human beings. I think people are starved for that experience. So it’s fun that they’ve found it in this goofy movie that we’ve made.”
