How does Mark Darcy heartbreakingly die in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy?
I’m very bitter
Mark Darcy might have been a staple in the previous films, but heartbreakingly in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, it’s revealed that he’s actually dead. But how does Mark Darcy die in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, and does he also kick the bucket in the book?
Whilst we don’t see Mark Darcy die on-screen during Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, Bridget explains in a voiceover that she’s been a widower for four years after he was “killed” during a humanitarian mission.
Whilst it’s not explicitly mentioned in the film, in the book it’s specified that he passed away after getting involved in a landmine accident.
As for why the author of the original Bridget Jones books decided to kill him off, “she wanted to write about Bridget as a single mom, and Darcy, to be true to his character, would never have left Bridget of his own volition.”
However, the death of Mr Darcy doesn’t mean that Colin Firth isn’t in the film at all, as he appears as a memory to Bridget during moments when she misses him.
The director of Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy revealed how it was having Colin on set despite being killed off, and admitted that Colin felt like “he was a ghost.”
The director added: “Not that he’s playing a ghost, he’s much more playing a memory – but he said it was a bit like that because you walk through this space where you’re kind of not part of it, but you are.”

Still, I don’t think I’m emotionally prepared for a Bridget Jones film without Mark Darcy in it, but hopefully, the inclusion of Leo Woodhall will help to soften the blow.
