Thought Wicked was good? You’re seriously not prepared for the fire that is Brazilian Defying Gravity

Anyone fancy a trip to Rio?

I honestly didn’t think that Wicked could get any better, but after falling down the rabbit hole that is Brazilian theatre, I’m about ready to purchase a Portuguese dictionary and hop on a plane.

If your TikTok is anything like mine right now you’re probably seeing Wicked, Wicked, and even more Wicked, from the Jonathan Bailey Bridgerton easter egg to the hilarious holding space memes. But now it seems my TikTok algorithm is running out of content – which honestly might say more about me than the platform’s coding – and is giving me my favourite Wicked songs in other languages.

Somehow, Wicked songs in Portuguese pack more of a punch

There’s something quite disorientating about listening to a song in another language. You know it’s the same tune, with the same words, but due to different syllables and timing the result can be quite different to what you’re used to.

In the early hours of Monday morning amid another bout of insomnia, I rolled over to ignore expert advice and scroll through TikTok until I passed out. That is when I was introduced to Cena Musical, a publication that covers all things musical theatre in Brazil.

After the enormous success of Wicked, clips originally posted by Cena Musical began to surface online. I don’t speak Portuguese, but now I know what people mean when they say music is a universal language.

The first Portuguese rendition I saw was of Popular, the quirky song sung by Ariana Grande when she is making up Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba with makeup, clothes, and an unsuccessful attempt at magic. For an English speaker who doesn’t know a word of Portuguese, I was totally blown away, with the language itself lending an air of flounce and bounce that Glinda is known for.

Still not asleep I scrolled to the next video, which coincidentally was a Cena Musical video of What Is This Feeling? Though the word popular in Portuguese is phonetically very similar, the word for loathing is quite different and pronounced “Odio”. As you can expect it was a thrilling watch.

The last video I watched before finally getting some shut-eye was a concert performance of Defying Gravity, which we know is an incredibly difficult song to sing. Nonetheless, the actress belted the high note perfectly and even had me tearing up.

I have now watched a concerning amount of Brazilian musicals on the Cena Musical YouTube page. Soon, you will too.

I’m not the only one enthralled by Brazilian Wicked

If I thought it was just me with an addiction to Brazilian Wicked then I wouldn’t be writing this article, but as it turns out, many people on TikTok confessed to being similarly enthralled by the videos which have since accumulated upwards of 200k likes.

Beneath the Popular rendition, one person said: “Wicked Brazil you have my whole heart and soul.”

“Brazilian dialect is already so pleasing to the ear and generally melodic, I would love to watch a whole recording of this cast, sounds wonderful!” another person said, while a third added, “Hearing this in different languages is something I didn’t know I needed.”
